Hi..I'm new here..My brother has a 30 foot Dory and needs a new outboard for it. He doesn't know about computers, and I don't know about boats, so I'm asking for him.

he's thinking he wants a 90hp and has narrowed his search to Suzuki, Yamaha, and Johnson.

is there a 'pro/con' comparison, review or something like that anywhere?
Or, does anyone here have opinions?? :D

I'd really appreciate some feedback, thanks, Jim

Hello, SP.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Those are all very good engines.

In a traditional 2 stroke I would prefer the Johnny for it's larger displacement.

I think you are talking 4 strokes, though, because Suzuki no longer makes a 2 stroke in that range.

In the 4 stroke I would still go for the Johnny/Suzuki (same engine), but get the 115 because it is the same engine in higher tune. If he prefers the Yamaha I would still recommend the F115 for the same reason.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the welcome, and for the input. I will relay that info to him..
you say all 3 are good engines, is one more prone to repair problems than the others? and I'm talking about new, not a used engine.

Re: new guy needs advice :)

The Yamaha F115 has had some reported problems with fuel getting into the oil during and just after break-in. They seem to have solved that with higher temp termostats and recommending break-in with petro oils only. If you prefer synthetics, as I do, don't use them until the engine is well broken in.

I have only heard of one case of that happening with the Johnny-Uki DF115, but the solution is the same.

The above problems have to be considered rare. Follow break-in instructions exactly and you should have near bulletproof reliability from either engine.

Good luck. :)

One 90/115hp motor is enough for a 30 foot boat?
Seems like there should be more hp back there, or is that normal for a dory?

most of the power is used for just getting thru the surf..there's not much to a dory so it really doesn't have alot of weight. and it may be closer to 25 feet.I was estimating from the last time I saw it 2 weeks ago. Fun to watch the dory's launch right off the beach.

JB, you mention synthetic oils above. What is a properly broken in hours figure to start using it? I ask, because in motorcycles, most are broken in by 1000 miles, whereas most manufacturers don't recommend synthetic oil until at least 5000 miles to allow the ridges and valleys in the cylinder walls and on the pistons to be as smoothed out as possible. Using synthetic too early prevents complete break in. My Yam FT60B has just done 200 hours and I've serviced it as per the book using Yamalube, but would like to start using synthetic... but when?
