Hi all

New to the forum and soon to be new boat owner. I have owned and worked on quite a few in the past but it has been a while. The last one being an older MR I/O if I rememeber.

I have picked up an older 1988 boat pretty decent with the intent to put a little work into it. (famous last words)

Anyhow the first thing that I have noticed is I suspect the upper swivel shaft on the port drive might be leaking as there is silicone there?

Any insights hopefully the pivot is not worn out and I have to replace the gimbal housing or something crazy

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mat, welcome aboard! :D

You're going to need to give us a little more info - we know it is a pretty decent 1988 boat.... but that's about it. ;)

Re: New guy questions

Sorry about that.

I have not had it in the water yet but while doing an inspection saw someone put silicone in the top pivot, I suspect where the steering swivel is on the gimbal ring. I know there is a seal in there but have heard lots about the pivot wearing out. Would rather not put in a transom assembly if I can get away with it.

Wondered is there was any insight before I dive into it in a while as I would rather get a head start during the winter if I am into some work.

Boat is a 27' has twin 350 mags with alpha drives.

Thanks
Mat

Head up to the adults only sticky, there are links to the OEM manuals you can download for your engine and drive.
Short of taking it apart and inspecting, it's impossible to say what it needs to stop the leak. The first thing to do is make absolutely sure of where the leak is coming from. It could be that the leak is above where you see the water.

Yep since I have been lurking for a bit now I have been there, I have the manual and have read through the section that goes through the top steering pivot area. It has a bushing and a seal in there but I have heard quite a bit about the gimbalr rings wearing out. Just wondered is there were any words of advice before I start tearing into it. I know there has to be something going on there if someone siliconed it.
