Just joined. I inherited a 1950 Evinrude 14hp Fastwin 4438-06986. Don't know how long she's been a sitting. Couple of questions. What is the leaking stuff in the photos? It looks like Shellac.
Also, do you need to add lead additive in with the fuel? I haven't tried to fire it up yet. Gotta get the right gas tank first plus line.

I'm sure I'll have more q's later but this is a good start.
Thanks!!

If I had to guess, that is the goo they sealed the coils in when new. Over time, the sealant runs off, particularly in hot areas over a period of years... That motor was pre-Universal magneto and has hard to find coils in it. I believe there are some aftermarket coils that have been made to work, but I have not done the conversion myself.

no!!! you don't have to add lead additive to fuel as unleaded was around way before leaded.way back tetraethyl lead was added as a way to increase octane with the advent of higher compression inboards .you motor is def not a high comp motor and requires only reg unleaded .

Yep, I'll have to agree, that is your ignition coils running down there. Actually, they failed early on. Only used a couple of years, new ones are part #580040, rare and expensive. Lots of guys have installed new Universal Magneto coils on the old laminations. I haven't done it myself.

I think I only have a couple 580040 coils left myself sorry that are any good.

I have modified the laminations and installed a Universal coil on it as Frank stated, works just fine. Cheaper too!

Re: conversion process

Re: conversion process

ok guys thanks for the reply. Is there a thread on the conversion process? Laminations? Not having ever worked with a magneto and coils am not sure what you are talking about. I am a medium level self-taught mechanic so I can probably wade my way through but need some guidance here. Wow tetraethyl. Haven't heard that in years. Just knowing the word I guess dates me.

Woops jumped the gun. Looks like the conversion is in I the top secret files.
