Hi,Boaters just recently purchased a 24'grady offshore with dual 1999 150 ficht. They have had all upgrades w/500 hours on them,They fire right up and run wonderfully....except one motor over 4000rpm will trigger hot light beep and go into
safe mode..anything under 4000rpms runs purfect
no problems or lights(all day long)...Past original owner said he replaced thermostats, but that could be only here say ,i have noticed on water prssure gauge
that this particular motor has 30psi when at 3400rpm.other motor at 15 psi..can you help me?
oh i can shut off and refire and start running
with no problems...

1988 gray white offshore
w/armstrong bracket
&dual 150's

Welcome 88offshore,

From a purely mechanical point of view, the difference in psi between motors would seem to indicate some sort of obstruction in the water passages, whether its from a t'stat not fully opening or something else is dificult to say.

Since the motors are apparently mew to you the prudent thing to do may be to replace the t'stats & water pumps in both motors and have both systems properly flushed.

Somebody more familiar with your motors may have other or better advice. :p

IF the waterpump kit was replaced recently, it sounds like they installed the wrong one. There are 2 kits that look almost identical, but will lose water pressure if the wrong one is installed on motors with a 25" shaft.

Your motor (I'm assuming is 25") requires a #5001595 waterpump kit. Perhaps someone installed either an off-brand kit or the incorrect #5001594 kit.

IF there are any thru-hull fittings, transducers, or "speed-wheels" within 14" of the prop centerline, or marine growth on the hull, aerated water could be causing the overheat at high speeds. The motor needs a good supply of "solid" water at the gearcase intake screens.

Re: new here and need your advise.150 ficht

thanks for your reply guys!..However i changed the 2 upper t-stats.my mechanic says that theres another one below the housing, where i cant get to.
(im in a slip with no trailer),Like up the creek
with no paddle..
Changing the 2 did not help.I have this high pressure as soon as you fire up the motor
it pees really hard, but as soon as you rev it up
the gauge will fly to 30 max psi,at idle about 10psi,so with increase in press i dont think its the pump? I guess i need to get it out and change that other lower t-stat?anything besides water to flush this system?would like to take the motors over 4000rpm.....

For any motor that is "new to you" I would replace both the t-stats and water pumps even is the seller "said" that they were replaced yesterday especially if you are getting indications of overheating.

I'm not at all familiar with these engines. That being said, do these motors have pressure relief valve system like a merc. If this was a merc and the water pressure was building up at higher RPMs I would guess the poppit is stuck and won't open. This would definitely cause the engine to overheat.

-andy

There is a service notice for that problem, there is a specific repair for that problem that your Johnson/Evenrude shop should be aware of. I'm not at the shop right now, so i can't give you a specific number on it. It involves drilling a hole in a specific location in your midhousing
