Wealth of knowledgable folks on this board...

Got a 1991 Evinrude 48 Special.

I have already purchased a new fuel tank and line and ran some seafoam thru it. I have also did all the throttle linkage adjustments suggested in Clymers.

The motor will fire then die almost immediately, faster if I throttle it up. Have not adjusted or rebuilt the carbs yet. The motor has sat for a while. Any other options before I rebuild the carbs and the fuel pump?

The motor never really idled great to begin with. One other question: there is a red valve on the starboard side that will spit some fuel out at start up. I am assuming that is the fuel primer solenoid?

Thoughts??

Thanks in advance.

Have you done a compression test yet? If it checks out ok, clean or re-build your carbs.

Have not done a compression test yet. Where can I purchase the adapters and gauges for the test?

You very well may have to go through the carbs AND the fuel pump but first a few questions to try to narrow this down.

Is this motor new to you?
Did you run this motor in the water before?
How long ago?
How old is the water pump impeller?

Now, about this dying,
Does it die immediately upon releasing the starter key?Could the ignition switch be grounding and killing the engine?

Do you have to pump the primer to get it to restart? Are the carbs running out of fuel?

Have you tried pumping the primer before or while it is in the process of dying? Then rebuild or replace the fuel pump and retest.

I have run the boat on and off since it was purchased new in 1991. It has provided me many fond memories. Purchased another boat a few years back and this one got neglected. My bad. The motor always seem to run worse and worse. Its seems the carbs are extra sensitive. The water pump was replaced 3 years ago. The motor will spit and sputter and then die.

I just got done removing the carbs. They were both gummy, especially the part with the long gold colored rod that goes thru the carburetor. It has a tiny hole that terminates in the bowl. What is this for? That small hole was totally clogged and was gummy. All the other orifices looked ok. The main gummyness was at the carb bowls. I got both carbs soaking in Seafoam as we speak.

The carbs had plenty of fuel in them.

you need to soak those carbs, remove the high and low speed jets. clean them, remove the top core plug make sure the 2 little holes are clear. you will need two rebuild kit. seafoam will not do it. get a gallon of carb cleaner with the soaking basket. that thing is totally full of gunk. you need a special tool to remove the jets.

you also probably need a new impeller, 3 years no use, it will probably come apart, and clog the water passages.

Thanks Daddy!

Where are the high and low speed jets located?
