Hi, I am helping my neighbor with a 94 XR6 repair. Cylinders 1 and 2 seemed to have overheated and #1 threw the rod. I have pulled the power head and removed the piston in 1 and noticed aluminum scuffing on the cylinder wall. Aluminum is imbedded in the bore and I am sure I can get it out.
He said he had the local dealer overhaul this motor about 6 years ago. I noticed hone marks on the other cylinders and they still look pretty good.
My book shows specs for a XR4 but doesn't cover the XR6 motor, I plan to change that shortly by ordering a new manual.
My question is, can these cylinders be bored or honed? I have found different sources for oversize pistons and rings but my book shows XR4 and most all motors after to have chromed cylinders and the book does not recommend honing. Since it has obviously been honed in the past I am wondering whether I should clean the cylinder and repair the existing power head.
Any help would be appreciated. FWIW, I believe that he had his jackplate too high and the top two cylinders overheated. It doesn't look like a oiling problem as the other cylinders look pretty nice.
Thanks in advance...
