Well, we are the proud owners of what we'll call FLOATER! Kinda like the one that wont flush ya know!! I have a few questions and want to see what advise I can get from you guys. Boat (1973 Richline) 24 ft 50hp johnson. The transom is in need of some repair, it is bent down due to the age I'm sure but I feel certain that the top of it should be level with the top of the toons. It stick outs (with no other support ) a good 20 inches or so so the leverage it pretty harsh I think. Now, My question. Does moving the transom in say 10 inches (to reduce flex) negativly affect anything? The transom right now is flush with the back of the toons so the whole motor more less is past them. My next question is I bought some new but usesd BRP controls that are supposed to be for a johnson ( red plug) same as whats one my motor. I tried them the other day and got nothing.. Is there something I'm missing, cause they are supposed to be unused but not in the box either! wiring adapters or something?

Welcome!

A picture or two of your set up wouuld be very helpful.

What year is your engine? I would suggest you open up a thread in the Johnson/Evinrude area for the engine issue.

Re: New Here! Transom question 1973 richline 24ft.

Welcome to iboats.

Ya some pics would be really helpful, the motor pod itself isn't level or the the actual transom that holds the motor isn't level?

And I am unclear on what is sticking out 20'' and what sin't level with the tubes.

Moving the pod could cause some runnig issues with cavitation, the water under the boat is really torn up when you under way, you have the wakes from each tube hitting each other and generally they run better with the pod set back.

As to the controls, you don't say what engine you have other than a Johnson, if it is the same year as the boat then I don't know if they will work or not, BRP didn't take over OMC till 2001, as DJ said get that in the correct forum.

Re: New Here! Transom question 1973 richline 24ft.

I gotta figure out the pic thing! The transom top is not level with the top of the pontoons like it should be. The transom is bolted to the floor crossmembers which set directly on the top of the toons , the toons are flat on top . From the last crossmember to the motor end of the transom is a good 18-20 in. with no more support. I thought about putting another crossmember further out for more support but it would be much easier to move the whole thing further inboard to accomplish it. Staring at different boats the last few days, some set in a few inches and some set way in to the point almost the whole motor is flush with the back of the toons. The motor is also a 73 50 horse jonhson, unknown year on the controls other than they have alot of extra wires for the gauges and such on newer boats!

tryin to put pics up. If they work out, the crossmember you see on the very rear is just for reference. The one directly behing it is the last one on the boat and the rest of the transom is unsupported. The others show the droop which appears to be around 1- 1 1/2 , along with a shot of the back of the pontoons being flush with the motor mount.

Re: New Here! Transom question 1973 richline 24ft.

now I understand, could you flip the back couple crossmembers over since they are bent down, that should reverse the problem and make it straight again.

I am suprised those bent, they are really beefy looking btu having weight on them for 38 would do that I geuss.

You could move that up a bit but your crossmembers will still be bent so I think you will have the same problem so Ipersonnaly would try flipping them and see what that gets you.

its the transom its self that is bent, the crossmemebers are are still straight. I'm going to take it off and straighten it all out plus add some 2in. by 1/4 thick aluminum angle to the top (where it bolts to the crosmembers) to strengthen it all up. I really want to just move the transom inboard about 10 inches to get past the bends in the transom. Cavitation is the main worry, but I wonder how it will effect the boat coming up on plane ( will it hold the nose down too much ? ) !
