Great site you guys have here. I just got my first boat here in Florida. I was looking forward to a new adventure in the boating world. I just got a 1986 Bayliner 22'. I have spent the last month or so getting it ready for the water, new floor, new seats, installed a fish finder and radio. I took it out a couple of times testing it before I take the family. After 2 tow ins from sea tow I am really frustrated. I got the steering fixed and the starter, and did a complete tune up. I took it to the lake this weekend only to find my bellows are torn and my out drive is full of water. The wife is ready to kill me over this thing LOL. Is there any easy way to replace this?? Do I need to dismantle the whole unit to get it out?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: New here!!

Howdy, and welcome to iBoats!

If you bought it that way and it's in need of a rebuild you may just be better off replacing
it.

If it's a Mercruiser you can replace it with a Sterndrive Engr drive. http://www.sterndrive.cc/ fairly inexpensively.

If it's a Volvo Penta it will cost more. If it's an OMC Cobra....well....do a search on OMC Cobra.

Stay tuned...

Cheers,

Rick

Re: New here!!

Sorry about that, its a volvo penta 270. Not sure what the motor is the guy I got the boat from told me it is a Chevy 350, and all the parts I have bought so far has fit perfectly when I order for a chevy. The motor has about 20 hours on it sence it was installed. Also not sure if this is to much motor for this boat, because it will run up to about 55 and it feels very good, but when I open it up all the way and it starts to go over 60 it gets very hard to handle. I wasn't sure if the speedo was working properly, so I put my GPS in it and it definatly is running over 60 mph. Other than the bellows problem it seems to run great. Just not sure whats the easiest way to get the drive shaft out. One other note, this has no power steering and it stinks when you are pulling a tube LOL. Thanks again for the help.

Re: New here!!

BTW I did not run this for more then a minute when I got to the lake. I noticed the oil as soon as I got of the trailer, and tied up to the dock. I inspected it the other times I went out, and it was fine. just very dry, I new I had to replace it soon, just didn't realize it would be this soon. Is there any free online manuals for these?

Re: New here!!

It's impossible to say how bad the drive is, if it was full of water and not oil. Water doesn't make a good lubricant.
You do need to drain the water, and put in some oil ASAP to keep the rust down. You also will have to pull the upper gear box to replace the bellows. If you were running in salt water, you may have even worse problems. If water has gotten into the engine bellhousing bearings, they will have to be replaced before the lockup and destroy the bellhousing. A guy just had that problem a few weeks ago.

That is because there isn't any.
An OEM service manual will help, but it will not give you anything close to step by step instructions on what to do. It was setup for Volvo Penta techs that went to the schools.

Re: New here!!

Well I got it done yesterday. Camera was broke so I didn't get any pics. I bought the service manual, and it was so easy with there instructions, I thought I was doing something wrong. The book I bought from Clymer was the best investment I ever made for the boat. The upper gear housing has to come off, and the steering Helmut, then after that it was a breeze. If anyone else has problems doing this let me know and I can scan in the pages from the manual. Thanks Don for all the help.
