HI, I bought a brand new carburetor Holley NOT Re-manufactured Model 4160 Marine Carburetors 0-9015- 750 cfm, Square Bore, 4-Barrel, Vacuum, Electric Choke, Dual Inlet, Dicromate to my 454 engine standart (TRS 400 Generation IV), my question is, this carburetor is already set from factory ?, I just have to tune the minimum and choke only ?, Because if not so happens that the Engine turns but can not start, I was check the timing and it is correct? ...The gas line is in 8 PSI, and i installed too a Full presure regulator marine Mallory and a new mechanical marine pump 110GPH..........

What could be???

Thanks in advance ....Erick

Ayuh,... Mercruiser has never used a Holley carb,...

Donno, but I doubt the carb is Pre-tuned to any degree of accuracy,.. Close maybe...

The motor not startin' could be 'bout Anything,...
As it takes Fuel, Fire, Compression, All at the right Time....
Yer missin' 1 of the 4....

What do the spark plugs tell ya,..??

Merc did use a Holley on that engine.

If you didn't buy the carb specific for your 400TRS, then it's probably not set up to factory specs inside the carb. But it will be close enough to start with no problem.

Have someone pump it at the control, and remove the air arrestor and look to see if the carb is pumping fuel. If not then the float bowls are not full, and you have a fuel pump issue. If it is squriting in the carb, then you might want to check for spark. My .02

Holley carbs are pretty simple, I can take them apart in my sleep, I have used them in racing for many years.

It should be close enough to run from the factory, you'll need it running to set anything on it anyway. Float level and idle mixture have to be set while your engine is running and at normal operating temperature.

Holley carbs are great in my opinion, the people that usually talk down about them are the ones who don't (or won't) understand how to set them up properly.

Re: New Holley Carburetor 4160 NO START ?????

A Holley is not a complex carb, so there is not much to actually go wrong, and even completely out of tune, it should still run with it. Only thing I can think of is having the float adjustment so far out to the point the needle never opens, so the bowl never fills. I only know that can happen because I have done it. Should be able to look down the carb throat with the choke open, pump the gas and watch the squirters work. If they don't work, needle/seat isn't working or the accelerator pump is not working.

If you have fuel and air. Distributor Could be 180 out. Should pop and crack if that's the case.

Did the engine run before the carburetor was replaced?? If not, then why did feel the carburetor needed replacing. If it did, then something you did was done incorrectly.

Re: New Holley Carburetor 4160 NO START ?????

Couple of thoughts:
Was the engine running just before the change in carb, fuel line and pump?

If so, you may just be 'out of gas' until the pump fills the system.

Secondly, in my former circle track experience, I have received new carbs from some vendors that have blocked the float(s) to preclude damage to the needle/seat during shipment. Verifying float height in a Holley is normally a breeze, especially if you have clear float plugs. :)

How did you accomplish this...."I was check the timing and it is correct?" if no start? Just curious.

Maybe the electric choke is not hooked up correctly? could be affecting power to the coil.
