Just got the new Honda 90 and my Lund 1675 Impact. On my previous post someone wanted me to put up some numbers once I got the motor. After breaking it in for a couple of hours tried it at WOT. RPMs where around 6000 and ran at about 40mph on the speedo. Runs like a champ and has a great holeshot for a 4 stroke. One thing I did notice was it was considerably louder at 6000rpm than at 5000. Like it seems almost twice as loud? Expected more noise at WOT but is that normal? Realize it is still in the breakin period and didnt leave it WOT for more than a minute. Will post another thread when I get a few more hours on it. Some info on the boat it is 1150# dry and is a deep v hull with split windshield.

That's just the way 4 strokes are--very quiet at lower rpm's, but they do get louder at full throttle. 2 strokes are loud at many speeds--especially the top 2/3 throttle.

Just enjoy your fabulous new motor for the smoothness and economy. If the noise gets on your nerves, just back it down a little to get back in the quiet rpm range.

6000 seems a little high to me too. Once break in is completely done maybe look at a new prop if thats going to be your usual load?

You are hearing the VTEC feature of this engine kicking in.It is an oil pressure/solenoid driven system that opens another set of valves.Since every engine has a dead spot Honda has come up with this to compensate for that cam timing issue.Pretty ingenious.Enjoy your toy.

Re: New Honda 90 VTEC

I told the dealer when I first started looking that I wasnt interested in the Mercury. Actually I had an Etec on the boat I traded and was leaning towards that but decided to go with the Honda. He gave me 3 prices with the 3 different motors. Paid a bit more for the Honda but hoping it is worth it in the long run. Seems to be working good so far and love the way it will troll down to 500rpm.
