I had to get a new ignition switch for m boat and all the letters are the same but there is an A on the old switch and an I on the new switch...Are they for the same wire? I thought I hooked it up right but the starter was going counter clock wise (backwards) and was not engaging.

EDIT: Nevermind, after doing some searching on the forum I found the answer... Damn I love this forum.

Ok, After redoing the wiring the starter is still going backwards. Meaning it wont rise up to engage the flywheel.

Do you have the battery in backwards ??

Sounds like a backwards battery to me.

But gotta ask--are you sure it is spinning backwards, or are you basing that on the gear failing to rise? It should be rotating counter-clockwise when viewed from the top.

Second comment: Depending on what motor you have, a backwards battery hookup will instantly do serious and expensive damage. You cannot disconnect it fast enough to avoid that damage.

Its rotating correct, I had a buddy come check it out who knows car engines and he did something and it started working. I think I came to the conclusion it was backwards when I did it by hand.

Appreciate the answers and responses.

.

That's what I figured. You are not the first one to come to that erronious conclusion, and you won't be the last.
