1988 5.7,upper pivot was worn, letting salt water run on shaft, tried prying outdrive off but can see 'flex plate',coupling? flexing, from inside boat ,trying hydrocloric acid on spline to remove rust, sounds crazy but i think its hardened steel, boat shop said they chain tilt shaft to tree and pull boat forward and fix what breaks! any other ideas????????????? new to site, hope i can find answer when i come back!my e mail EDIT if someone can direct me,i do my own mechanics and have a fair amount of tools NEW INFO this is a 1988,5.7 chevy, cobra drive, didnt shift into forward at first, didnt think it matterd as the shift fork is open, pointing forward, the open fork just pulls away, from the mechanisim the gimble seems not stuck as i can see spline moving back and forth from in the boat when moved out at outdrive!the spine is rusted in the coupler, the "rubber"flexplate moves with it! sliding thru gimble?i can see that with a mirror, got a good idea from diesel repair friend, use an air chisel to hit shaft lots of vibrations to dislode rust

Howdy,

Please post a little more info. Make model serial of the engine and drive.

Also, Edit and REMOVE your email from your post. Bad things happen when you put your email in a public forum!!

Actually I saw Cobra in your subject line......

There's not a lot of ways to get a splined yoke out of the gimbal bearing and/or coupler if it's rusted in.

Some have used a cutting torch to simply cut it off so they could get an engine out. and have cut the yoke to get the drive off.

None of those ways are very desirable.

Couple more questions.....

Did you buy this boat recently?, did you pay very much for it?

Cheers,

Rick

Welcome ..

You need 2 do 2 things.

1. Get a new mechanic

2. Remove your email address, it's a no-no and a mod will come along and remove it for you if you dont. You will get answers right here in your post.

The chain and tree may sound out to lunch, but it is a real world last ditch effort.

Ayuh,.. And only slightly Riskier than torching off the shaft behind the motor...

Try this... disconnect everying on the drive, all the mounting bolts and trim rams so the drive floats on its trim pins. Lift the drive up by hand and stick a 2x4 under there and then start slamming the drive down on the 2x4. That trick gets 99% of the stuck ones.

Instead of breaking aluminum housings cut the shaft with a saw-zaw

2 options.
option 1,attach the trim rams to the drive.
with the drive down cut a block of wood that fits between the upper housing and the transome shield.
hit the trim up.
if that doesnt work option 2 is a sawsall and cut the shaft just aft of the coupler.
then lean what PREVENTIVE maint is.
always cheaper than CORRECTIVE maint.

Soak the splines in PB-Blaster for a couple days then use Rodbolt and Jason's methods....it should come off....
