Hello again. Well my mechine didn't touch the motor, if yall read my other post ... So i tore the motor apart my self. I inspected the splines on the end of the drive shaft and the splines on the bottom of the power head. They both are in great shape.

Now he say it's the main bearings of the motor that are bad. Can i get to them now that i have the upper and lower sections of the motor apart? Another question i have is can i get bearings and gears for a 1973 mercury 20hp? If so where and how much are they ?...Gears for the upper sections that is.. Any other help would be greatful Thanks RCobb

A manual will help with your repair. Click
"Marine Mega Mall" at the top of the page.

Might try mercurypartsexpress.com for oem parts availability if IBoats mall doesn't carry them!

Similarly try http://www.dougrussell.com to price compare :) . Use the button on the left hand side labelled browse under Parts Search.

You shouldn't have to much of a problem

Good luck Ryan

Roller & ball bearings, and seals can be had at a local bearing supply house (Kaman is the one in my area). Take your old bearings with you and they can match them up. The rod needles can be gotten at a Merc dealership. None of the bearings in that powerhead are very expensive...

- Scott

Re: (NEW) info on 1973 20hp Mercury

Well ordered a manual last night at a place on the web. Got a Clymer Mercury outboard repair manual 3.5-40hp 72'-89'. My motor falls in the hp and year. I wonder if i'll need any special tool to take the bearings out with, or should they slide right out? Any way i should recieve the manual Monday afternoon(who really needs with the mail!). Will keep yall posted on this project! :D Thanks RCobb

Re: (NEW) info on 1973 20hp Mercury

Well got manual on Monday. To pull flywheel, the manual says to use a strap wrench and 1/2'' socket wrench to get flywheel nut off. I bought a strap wrench and have the socket size and wrench.

The nut will not even move. I can't get it off at all. Even with the tools that the manual says i need, i have and they don't work? What do i do now?  Rcobb

Eat more wheaties. :D :D :D

Seriously, if you can, have a friend hold the flywheel still with the strap-wrench while you crank on the nut.

Make sure you're turning it the right way, and that you have a long enough bar to get the leverage you need on it.

If it's that bad make sure you have a 6 point socket on it to avoid rounding it off under hi-torque.
