Just bought the boat and motor. It's a 1976 merc 500 in really good shape. Very very clean. Guy i bought it from i know, and he had it on the water last year without issues. He replaced the impellor , plugs, lower unit lube last spring, and it has been used about 4 times since. So..i cleaned her up a bit, changed out poor batt. cables, and just today wanted to hear it run. She fired right up and ran Mint, but after 8 seconds or so, i didn't see a pee stream so i cut it off. There is a rubber nipple where the water should come out from, and i Reeeeally don't want to drop the lower if i have a choice. I don't think i can snake a wire in there to look for obstructions the way it is designed.. Any ideas before i tear into yet another project? There is a flush hole in it, if i get that adaptor, will i see the pee stream?.. Or where does that water go if not partially out the pee hole..

Reading the forums, i may have answered my own question..I have smaller outboards. With the 50, there must be a thermostat. Am i correct in thinking there would be no water until the thermostat opened?

went back out and let it run for about 45 seconds.. Still no water. Called the previous owner and he said it takes a bit to start, but i dont want to take a chance without knowing for sure. How long does it take for a motor to start pumping?

There is something wrong there, it should start spewing water after a few seconds. Are you using water hose ears or is the boat in the water? If you are using ears, make sure you have enough pressure.
You could carefully try and feed a wire or something similar in the hose to see if there are any obstructions or take it right off and have a look. I wouldn't run it any longer than about 10 seconds when you go to check it out again.
Is there any sign of water at all coming out the hole?.......Irv

Re: new inpellor, but not pumping,,

Im using the Muffs with plenty of pressure. I don't think i can snake a small wire in there due to the design..So i guess im SOL. No sign of water thru the relief..Im wondering if i get the flush adaptor for it, if that forces water thru the relief so i can at least tell if it's obstructed, or water pump..It was working and new last year though. It takes me a day to do even the easy stuff, so i really hate to tear it apart..But i will if i have to, and it sounds like i may. Thanks for the reply..

Have you tried blowing air into the tell tale to see if it is blocked or not? I have a 25 hp that I had to do that to. Worth a try at least. Later, Paul
