Hi,
I am planing a trip from long island to chesapeake bay this summer on my 31 ft sail boat with a 5-1/2 ft. draft. In the past I have stopped over night at the shrimp box restuarant in manasquan on my way south. It was a great deal at the time, something like $10 a night to tie up to their bulkhead and if you bought dinner at their restaurant they took off the $10 fee from your bill. I understand they no longer allow you to stay overnight at their bulkhead. If this is true is there any place else in manasquan where you can anchor for the night or tie up reasonably? I know there is a marina just below an opening bridge but the current in that area is really strong and not easy to deal with for a sail boat. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can try Clark's Marine Landing in Point Pleasant. They have a nice restaurant. You will have to go under the Rt 35 bridge but this does open for larger boats. I believe their web page is www.clarksmarinelanding.com
You would be in walking distance of the Point Pleasant Beach which has shopping, a boardwalk etc. Good luck.

Bill-
No personal experience up north, but here's some southern tips:

-I've heard the ICW is getting shallow in spots below AC, so you'd better have some excellent local knowledge or plan to run to Cape May on the outside.

-When exiting the CM canal westbound, avoid the south side due to shoaling from the ferrys.

-If you've never transited the Delaware Bay, pay attention to the weather. Nuff said....

-When entering the C and D canal from the east, make the westbound entrance turn from the Delaware Bay channel (no shortcuts); there's a long -and often submerged- breakwater extending from the south side.

Good luck!

Re: new jersey boaters

Thanks for the help fellows , I have made the trip many times from long island to chesapeake bay , in fact we have gone all the way to the bahammas in a 43 sail boat. The last time I came down the delaware bay it was a horror show. We left chesapeake city with gusts from the north west at maybe 35 knots and when we got just passed the power company we had huge waves coming at both sides of our bow because of the wind against the current. That was one of the worst sea conditions we ever did see , white nuckles all the way down the bay to cape may canal. You are also right about the shoaling opposite the ferry's we came to an abrupt stop in the mud for a few minutes , but managed to back off and find the channel. We had a double problem because we had to leave cape may at low tide in order to get under the 55ft. bridge and then try to get thru the shoals by the ferry. It sounds like a real pain but it is well worth it when you get to chesapeake bay, it is a wonderfull place to cruise. We just love Annapolis,st michaels and all the other towns.
Thanks again for the help, Bill
