I've heard rumours that certain states are going to make it mandatory for school children to learn spanish as a second language throughout their school career and that it might even become an official language.

Can anybody confirm or deny this?

I heard the same things about ebonics. In all reality it is not likely. Our public schools can't teach english let alone spanish. They tried in several states to make english the official language. No luck.

Of course in California laws, rules, social norms don't apply so who knows. :D

Some big cities and some southern states are heavily populated with spanish speaking people.

I don't know if any are requiring it though.

There are many social engineering experiments going on in the public school systems.

There is a school district near me that is teaching the Mong (Cambodian) language and culture, as a way to help assimilate the large population of refugees that the State Department decided to place in the community.

Here in Tampa spanish is second nature. You learn it by osmosis. I used to be against it but realized that if they could do it. It couldn't be that hard to learn. :D :D As far as an official status, this is the United States of America. Adapt or leave. If you start to make any other language than American english an official language then the legal system will be altered. Contracts and other documents begin to have other meanings due to the differences in culture and custom.
