I figured everyone would like to know about the new legislation introduced this year to exempt recreational boaters from obtaining EPA permits. S 2766, Clean Boating Act of 2008, has been introduced to eliminate EPA permits for specifically for recreational boaters. You can check out this site to find out more info and contact your senators, http://www.boatblue.org/takeaction.aspx.
The time is getting very close for EPA permits to be required for all boats. So action is needed immediately!

So how does this bill affect me if I am running only on freshwater lakes in Oklahoma....And I don't have a boat with ballast tanks or grey water. Thanks

You are dealing with the government. Do you really need any other explanation?

Irdchaos - I might be mistaken about this, but as I understand it this could affect any boat with a bilge pump.

Re: New legislation in Senate for recreational boaters

I contacted my Congressman for this new legislation and the previous legislation proposed in 2007.
If not passed it will effect every registered boat in the US. If you have 3 boats you will have to get a permit for each boat. If you boat in multiple states you might need a permit to boat in those waters also. The permit fee would depend on each state and is said to possibly cost $300 to $500 each. Fees would probably used to increase the DNR police on the waters and purchase all related equipment for enforcement. The EPA would probably over see everything, since the court has thrown this into the EPAs lap.
I urge everyone who enjoys to boat to contact your states representatives to support all related legislation. Remember if you don't act and we have to purchase permits for boating you can only blame yourself.

Just in case you have not heard, the Clean Water Act of 2008 (S.2766) which would give exemption to rec boats was defeated in the Senate, all becuase of one Senator (alaska) because only about half of the 3000 commerical fishing boats in her state would be effected. So the political math is 1500 campange paying boats over rides the other 18.5 million others.
I wonder if the Gov of Alaska will hire her on as the State of Alaska Greywater inspecter, after she is voted out of office. That is if she does not carry him down with her.

as long as you leave your boat in your back yard and dont put it in the water, i guess it wont.
if you do choose to run it, it still uses water from the lake that is pumped into and out of the boat and that is covered.
