New Lower Unit

Hi:

My lower unit on an 8-year old OMC 150 recently failed and needs to be replaced or rebuilt. The mechanic, who I have a lot of confidence in based on past work, told me that the gearcase is in bad shape and the housing is bent. He recommended against re-building, and quoted me $2800 for installing a new OMC lower unit, including parts and labor.

Any thoughts on the price? Any opinions on using an aftermarket lower unit instead, which might save a few hundred bucks?

Thanks in advance, this is one of the most useful sites on the Web.

Re: New Lower Unit

Thanks JB, I was looking at that. Can you explain to me what the core deposit is? Sounds like you return some part of your old lower unit to them.

Thanks,

Core means what they send you -- you send them. In this case it would be the lower unit. You may have to keep your shift shaft and / or upper driveshaft. The water pump you will replace anyway.

Good luck!
