Hi all.

Been having issues with the control level not going into Neutral and having to tighten the set screw alot.

Decided to take it off today, since it wouldnt go into N to start, and this is what I found..

Please tell me this is fixable as the actual part is NLA. How would I get it back to neutral to use JB weld the darn thing on, would have to pull the wires out for the trim./tilt and trailer switch but ok with that..

I have the manual,

it is this control..

I am thinking I can get it back on and aligned in neutral, then instead of the set screw, drill a hole into the shaft and put a bolt into it.

Just afraid that, that will interfere with the throttle only button..

That is the same as my 87, I'll bet you could find a junk one at almost any boatyard.

Yes it would interfere with your TO button and the handle would wear and crack around any pin or bolt holes very quickly also ruining the shaft.

New/used handle or new/used control box.

I just did a google search for "salvage boat parts", a lot of really interesting stuff came up, bet you could find your part no problem. Good luck!

Thanks guys, that about what I thought.

Thinking now of trying a metal sleeve around the shaft, then press the handle back on nice and tight, then set with set screw. Just as a temp fix until i can find a replacement handle.

Dont really want to have to replace the whole control, seems a little more then a drop in and go ordeal..

Ok update:

I managed to get the old handle back on and tight and secure, only problem is now, Neutral is at the 9pm location and full throttle is straight down.

I did not remove anything but the handle and the neutral switch ring.

How do i get it back to being neutral straight up and down?

Little bump to see if anyone has any ideas?

It sounds like an indexing issue...have you ever pulled the hands of a clock? Same concept. My guess is that something slipped when you were putting it back together.

Not sure where you are located, but there is a marine salvage place called Fairwinds Marina just north of Annapolis, MD. They have one of everything you never knew you needed and are pretty reasonable. Fun place to spend an afternoon digging through old boating crap. I think you can find them online. Let me know if you are interested but can't find them.

Sorry, I was intending to say, "If you can't get it to work, you might try..."

I thought along the same lines, but I didnt pull the control box off at all, only the handle.

I can not figure out why the whole thing seems to have slipped.

Ok another question maybe.

does the neutral switch ring, determine where neutral is on the control? The only thing I can think is that that ring is not in the right location for neutral to be stright at 12 oclock.

as it sits now, Neutral is around 10 oclock, causing full throttle to be all the way down at 6 oclock.
