Year 2000 Four Winns 205 with Volvo 5.7 ltr PEFS

Hi Guys, One of the manifold's in my son in law's Mercruiser engined Crownline recently failed and dumped water into the engine and so I am going to replace mine over winter. His boat is two years newer than mine but has seen more salt water but I think I'm on borrowed time so can anyone please answer the following:

1. Do I need to relace the risers/elbows as well as the manifolds? If one of these fails due to corrosion can water still enter the engine?
2. Are aftermarket manifolds ok (Sierra/Mallory)or should I stick with Volvo?
3. Any other jobs I should do at the same time apart from usual service?

Thanks in advance,

Ayuh,.... #1,... The risers are usually what fails first,... so, Ya, change 'em,....

#2,... I had issues with core shiftin' in a set of GLMs I bought,...
Flattened 'em, 'n so far, so good,...
OEM is No doubt Better,...

#3,... If yer system has shutters, replace 'em while ya got access to 'em,...

1) I would replace the manifolds and risers together. You cannot see inside the manifolds and risers to determine how bad they are but you can with the elbows. If the elbows look ok you could reuse, but a good inspection would be in order. Salt water does a number on both manifolds and risers and in my opinion they last 7 to 10 years sitting in salt, twice that if they are flushed and sit on a trailer.

2) After markets are fine, there are some differences but none which should effect bolt up. Only caveat to that would be if you were to go to aluminum or stainless headers. You didn't mention that so I'm figuring your not, just throwing it out there.

3) Look over the engine real good for signs of corrosion. Circulating engine water pump could be another area and exhaust ports.

Do your self a favor and go OEM.

If DonS was still here he would say the same. He never used aftermarket on the boats he worked on.

Re: New manifolds questions

I am going through the same dilemma just now, the mark up on these items compared to the USA is obscene. I am considering the Hi-Tek stainless manifolds from Australia they do away with the risers and the troublesome joint. Price wise they are similar, but I think it depends on the UK import duty or in my case Spanish. Hi-Tek Products Of Australia - Hi-Tek Marine

Thanks for that dypcdiver, they look interesting. Has anyone got personel experience of them and are they worth fitting to a boat worth no more than ?10,000?

Thanks

Have not personally used this type but have found others use them in forum post and have not heard of issues. On the question is it worth it, well I would say, if you plan to keep your boat then could very well be; if not then no. Nothing better on a boat then something you probably don't have to worry about.

I continue to worry whether I'm going to run out of cold beer :D ;)
