While looking for specs on my mariner, I stumbled upon this site. So here I am (any ideas on who to contact regarding my screen name??- filled out the wrong lines.) Anyway- 1971 Starcraft Mariner-16' 1990 Johnson 28hp SPL. New floors/carpet. Home made CC and home made tube frame top w/canvas. Not the prettiest, but she loves to fish in the rivers and bays.

Welcome Green. I think a moderator can help you with the name. You will have to tell them what you want.
Nice boat, I thought the top was pvc but now I don't think so. I never have seen a fish eat a boat, 'cept in Jaws, so I don't think they really care what it looks like;)
Pretty much any question you could ask about SC can be answered here. Heck even some answers may be correct.

The top is made from 1-5/8s aluminum. I went to a local top builder, they wanted 2-4k for a top like this. I am kinda the do-it yourselfer' so I shopped around, found some tubing, and I fabricated my own. I have $310 and a weekend into the whole job. The material is a heavy canvas that was left over from a custom made boat cover. The whole top weighs 71 lbs. Money saved is money earned.

Sweet fishing rig. I'd use it to haul lobster traps too.

Lots of new members lately and thats a very good thing. Giving us a larger knowlege base!

Re: New Mariner owner

Barato- according to my TomTom- she will run 24 mph with a head wind and 27-28 without any wind. That is on smooth water- 2'-4' swells slow us WAY down. Now that is loaded down with ice (60lbs), 12 gallons of fuel, 3 batteries, bow and transom mount trolling motors, or just a 5 hp trolling engine (transom mount) 10 fishing poles, bait, tackle, 3 adults, etc etc. Severely excceeding the max weight limit. But I will say- she is rated for a 50 hp, but I am quite satisfied with the performance of the 28 hp. Hops right on plane and cruises quite nice:) PS- I still need to change my screen name. How do I contact a Moderator?

Cheers!

You already have ( EZ):D is a Mod.
Darn man, with all that gear do you have room for fish? And I am guessing you are going fishing. Actually sounds like a ocean cruise to Africa.
Lets see...two electric trolling motors, 3 batteries, one kicker, and one main engine......Hmmmm, What NO paddle? I have to admire a man that goes prepared.:D

thanx Green. i'm considering repowering my 16' tinnie with a 4 stroke, and 30 hp is about the biggest that isn't way over the weight on transom envisioned by mfgr. as you note, chop slows you down and i figure i'll usually be dealing with some chop

Green-Sweep welcome to the club. Nice boat. You will fit right in with your DIY ways. Most, if not all of us do our own work around here. We like to fix motors or build brackets, what ever it takes to get on the water. Some cruise but most fish with our boats and that?s the great thing with these boats. You can modify them to suit your needs.

Working on it. We can't change usernames so I'm checking to make sure you won't have an issue re-registering using the same email address (I'm thinking you may).

Re: New Mariner owner

Thx for all the support and hello's. I hate to admit it, but I am one of those guys that can duplicate most anything I see. It might not be as nice, or shine like the big boy's toys'...... however, it still performs the same and that is the end result i'm looking for. Just to clarify, I dont take all three trolling moters at the same time- no room. If we are hitting the bays, I take the 5 hp engine, if we are doing the Escambia river and grass shallows, I take the 2 electric motors. FYI, for the Moderator- I- H.A.T.E croaker fish. They hit your bait and mess up the white trout, specs', and red fish. So I was intending for my screen name to be "Croaker-Soaker". If that can be arranged- that would be great!!!
