Hi, I've been searching the forums for several days now. There is great information here.

My 1989 Johnson 50 hp VRO T/T needs a new lower unit. Water infiltrated it and froze and cracked it in several places. To make a long story short, the last time I used the boat was in June. My wife got really sick on the trip and still is ill. I didn;t get to winterize my boat because of hospital DR.s etc. I never worried about the LU because there has never been a hint of any water intrusion. Well I found yesterday that it only takes once.

I need to know what years and what horsepower L/U will fit my motor. It is on a 20ft pontoon boat. and runs very well. Also, if anyone has a good source it would be helpful. I thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

you didn't state whether it was long shaft or short. the short shaft lower unit complete part number is 433340. the long shaft lower unit complete is part number 433341. they were used on both the 89, 90, 91 johnson and evinrude 50hp. looked at ebay and didn't see any at the present time. you could try tcoutboards.com
welcome to iboats, we will help you all we can.

Thank you. It is a 20 inch shaft. I ordered a manual on it this morning. I have pulled lower units on older mercs and evinrudes (60-70) but I have never done one this new. I know its not new to some of you guys, but its the newest I have ever owned:)

First of all, Welcome to iboats. There are several marine salvage sites on the web. Most of them have toll free numbers and are pretty helpful. tdaddy has the years for you now you just need to find one. You can get them at an attractive price from these places but pay attention to shipping costs. You might call or better yet stop by your local dealer and see if he has one in back on a pile he will let you have for a decent price. Just make sure you buy a little something else from him like the new water pump and seals that you will want to put in it.

Re: New member 1989 50hp need L/u questions

Thank you very much. I tried my local dealer. They want to sell me a new one for more than the motor is worth. I have looked at several of the salvage sites and have found a few. What would you expect to pay for this item used. Some places claim to have vacuum tested the units before selling them. I guess I need a rough ball park figure because I don't have any experience with what I ought to pay. I appreciate the help.

Re: New member 1989 50hp need L/u questions

right now you have a parts motor. nada values the complete motor a $465, which is rediculous. the motor in average condition i estimate at $700 to $1400. $300 to $400 would not be outragous, to get it running again. it will cost you 10 times that for a new one.

just googled lower units. been a long time since i bought one. watch ebay.

That sounds right. I'm willing to go as much as $500. I like the motor. My local dealer wanted $1725 for the LU and thats not even installed.

Check all the dealers in a 100 mile radius. I would drive an hour and a half to save that kind of money. I don't know where you are in the country but there ought to be a salvage yard kinda close I would think. Just try to make sure that it was run in fresh water or taken care of very well if it was from a salt water craft. Most of these salvage guys are big dealers and should treat you pretty good.

Where are yo located, I live in Florida and know many dealers through the state, I may be able to get you a # for a dealer depending on where you are and you can get intouch with them and have it shipped, as far as removal and instalation its fairly easy to do

Hey guys, I really appreciate you staying with me on this. I live in southern New Mexico. We have several good lakes around the state, but nothing like you guys in the south have. For that reason salvage stuff here can be harder to find, The good side of it is that what you do find is usually in pretty good shape because of the climate

Beck...outright soliciting to buy and sell are not permitted on the forums. However, you did it the right way by asking for an email addy to help out a fellow boater.

Good Luck to you both.....d:)
