Hey guys, New here and New to owning a boat. I bought a 16ft flats boat with a johnson 30HP with controls. Also Ive tried reading the model an serial number but its pretty much rubbed off ill take a picture and see what you guys think it could be later today. I was wondering about maintenance for it? when should i change the lower unit oil and when to change the water impeller and such. Right now im having a issue with it starting. Took it out a few times now no issues. Yesterday turned the key and nothing happened. like a dead battery. So I put a different battery on and still the same thing. So i jumped from the battery to the starter elimating the control box and it fired right up. So im thinking its the Neutral Saftey switch in the controls. Any suggestions? Not sure how to test the switch other than by passing it and wire it up with out the switch and see if it works.

Re: New member and a few questions :)

Welcome aboard, brandon.
Since you just acquired the motor and unknown maintenance history. Now would be the time to change the LU oil and water pump. Pics would be helpful to ID the motor. Also, if you can locate the serial number on a small silver disc on the engine block, a J/E dealer can help you ID the motor.

Also, I recommend getting a OEM manual for maintenance and troubleshooting. Else, its just a stab in the dark. Once you ID your motor, try to locate a service manual on ebay. Good luck.

Just make sure the red clip is nice and secure on the control box

one time I spent like 20 minutes and figured out the clip wasn't on very tight

i bought a OEM manual for mine off ebay for $25, they wanted $66 for it at the local marina. It sure comes in handy to have, no doubt about that

That model number indicates that your engine is a 1993 30hp Johnson. Control box is much older.

Did you ever get the bearing back? sometimes you can put some grease in to hold the bearing in place til you can put it back together.
I am having problems with my motor and just took mine apart and checked the safety & neutral switches.
