Hey Guys,
I have a 2003 Larson Cabrio With a volvo Penta 5.0 SX 270hp. I will follow up with the correct serial #'s when i get home from work. The Trim is erratic, some times it works and sometimes it dosent. When I trim up or down on the throttle I can here the relays "clicking". Someone told me to replace the motor, but the motor DOES work just not all the time, someone told me to replace the relays but I hear them "clicking" and they are not coroded at all (i took them out and looked at them. The fluid is filled to the full line. Could this be a "solinoid" problem? Not even sure what a solinoid looks like or what it does. I looked this website over and found some other people with trim issues on volvos but none seemed to "work sometimes and sometimes not". This problem started the end of last year (it was the 1st year i left it in a slip in SALT WATER!!) arggg!

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

The relays may click, but they may not transfer power to the motor, or the ground. Both relays have to work both up and down.
Faulty relays, corroded connections, or even a bad motor could cause an intermittant problem.

Don,

thanks for the quick reply. Ill try replacing the relays 1st. What do you think about the "solinoids"? Are these on the outdrive? Maybe they are corroded? I dont really know what the solinoid is.

Thanks
Martin

Volvo doesn't use solenoids, they use relays.

Something simple to try is get a volt/ohm meter and test your switch for continuity. Those switches on the dash aren't as bullet proof as you would think. Good luck. BTW, welcome to the forum.

UPDATE!!! Re: New member here! 1st boat problem, erratic trim on volvo penta.

Hi guys,

I just wanted to let you know after a lot of trouble shooting I found the culprit. The wires behind the throttle were all cut up and open to shorting out and touching each other. Looks like the wires were incorrectly routed behind the lever/throttle and were getting kinked when going in forward and reverse. I still appreciate all the help from everyone, as now ill know where else to look if this happens again!

Thanks again,
Martin
