boat has a 81 235. took it out for the first time today since the test run when buying. starts and idles great. when accelerating it bogs down. while slowly advancing the throttle i will find it is almost all the way down but still running slow. usually i have to back off the throttle for it to catch and go. if i back off too much it will go back to a fast idle. it is very hard to find middle speed. it either wants to go slow, or scream off after backing off a bit. it had a little old gas in it when i filled up on the way to the lake. does it sound like bad gas, plugs, carbs? what should i check first?
thanks!

A few things to check. Start with the fuel first. Pull the hose off the engine and pump a clear glass full of fuel, then let it set and check for water. At least you will know then. I'm not a fan of mixing new fuel with old-as I drain my tank each fall. I'd also check each of the plug wires with an inductive timing light, when running on the water. You should see strong, contstant, rhythmic flashes from each of the 6 plug wires. To check for weak fuel pump(s), prime the fuel hose bulb constantly when running. This will force fuel into the carbs, around a bad pump and the engine should run normally. If constant priming helps, replace the pump(s).
