Wow, just discovered this Forum and had to register. This is great.

I'm still running a late 50's Sears Elgin 14' Fiberglass Runabout with a 57 Scott Atwater 40 hp 2 cyl outboard.
I live right on the Ohio River so can boat about anytime the water is clear of debris. Been enjoying this most of my life.

Any other vintage boat operators here ?

Lots!

Welcome to the forum. My vintage boat was a '66 Starcraft Jupiter w/ a '73 Johnson 85. Sold it two years ago though in favor of a newer open bow.

We have many old boat enthusiast here, I roll with a 60 crestliner falcon and the ORIGINAL 30 hp merc engine . I think boating in one of these things is the next best thing to owning a time machine, Welcome aboard

Great to hear from you guys.

I've overhauled my drive with new bearings and seals but haven't had need to overhaul the power head as yet. I basically cruise up river to the Gallipolis Oh. Dam (now named after the late Sen. Robt C Byrd) and then drift back home.

http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/37156922.jpg

The Scott originally ran a 16:1 ratio of 30 wt motor oil but I use the BIA TCW in her now at 32:1
and it does fine. But if I'm fishing I've been known to bring an extra tank with some 16:1 in it to get rid of the mosquitoes. LOL But whenever I do it someone is always hailing me on the 16
asking if I'm on fire.

So those who know me joke and call my boat "The Crop Duster".

I'm always on the look out for outboard junk yards. Electra in Lynbrook, NY has furnished some parts for me and I've fabricated a bunch of them on my own. Not too many vintage buff's here
but when I've been up on Lake Erie I'm amazed at how many of them I see up there.

I think my next thing to do is send my brass 10x10 prop off to Michigan Wheel and get it
re worked. It's from the good old days of sheer pins. Remember those ?

I've also got an old Neptune that runs great but won't idle worth a hoot, and this little novelty called a Cruise and Carry or something like that. I'm needing to fix up the in and out of gear
cable as I have to hold the end in one hand and use the other to engage or disengage the prop. If I could just get the Neptune to idle down it would have some potential as a trolling motor. If I tow the boat to one of the larger lakes I could use it when fly fishing.

Yeah.....HOW-Dee ? Yeah I get that from time to time. LOL I always think it's Minnie Pearl callin.

How's Kentucky ? Great to hear someone has a vintage Scott rig being readied.

A few years back I was lucky enough to know a little ol' guy who had a small ware house of Scott Atwater motors for salvage. He was in Raceland, Ky below Ironton, Ohio. He's passed away now...........and you won't believe..

His kids saw a bonanza in all the "scrap aluminum" and junked everything he had to Mansbach Metals in Ashland, KY.

Talk about losing a fortune. I didn't have the hear to tell em. But their grand dad made a good living out of parting those motors out and had everything organized like a library.

Another guy I knew used to have a small boat repair shop in South Point, Ohio. He moved out to
the Dayton or Lima area and opened a shop there. He was telling me at the Ashland, KY boat show one year that he bought out the inventory of this boat business that had been closed down for years. On going into the warehouse he found some 15 boxes, new and unopened, of
Scott Atwater 40's, 45's, & 50's etc. I haven't seen him since.

My main parts hunt is for water pump impellers, fuel pump diaphragm's, and spares for mags & points/condensers. I'm not using the upper impeller for the "Bail-O-Matic" as my boat is tight
and doesn't leak much. (and I have an electric bilge pump with float switch)

Sheer pins always get me some amusing looks. One young kid asked me if I needed some "sky hooks" while I was talking to him. It took one of the older parts guys to convince him. LOL
But I did catch the kid off guard when I asked for some "mechanical brake fluid" for my trailer.

Welcome Dee,
I'm guessing fiberglass was kinda newish back in 57 or at least quite different than it is now. Do be kind enough to add pics if you've a mind to. How have you managed not to run into iBoats all these years?

HELL-O DEEJ And thank's for the reply KY.is a pretty state with all trees and mtn.and rivers and lakes.Nice pic.in next to last post ,my SCOTT is from the SCOTT-MCCULLOCH era.As for your parts you can get them on EBAY or THE SCOTT GUY .COM--- AS FOR THE OLD MAN IN ASHLAND,It's a shame his kids did not have sence to know what a GOLDMIND they had.My scott o/b came with a set of shear pins mounted in the motor I thought that was neat.People nowadays think if it's old get rid of it ,they don't have a clue how many people are looking for that part,o'well till next time---:)
