We have had several used boats in the past. We have finally been able to purchase our first new boat. The motor is a Mercury 125 ELPTO. What is the break in needed.

Re: New motor break in

I just did a 40elpto, book says 1hr with first tank mixed at 50:1, dealer told me 4hrs, skip mixed fuel he reckons only creates smoke and not necessary, vary throttle position often, and dont be shy with it. Full throttle bursts are recommended but only for bout 10secs a time.

Thats the way I did mine.

Rgds

Ron

Read your owners manual, then do what it says. Adding oil to the gas tank on an oil injected engine might sound odd, but is done to guarranty<sp> the engine get oils in case the oil injection system fails to operate.

Re: New motor break in

If it is oil injected, the manual would tell you to use 50:1 ratio as premix in the fuel tank. The oil injected system should mix gas/oil automatically at 50:1 ratio. With the mixed gas in the tank (50:1) plus the oil injected system(50:1), by the time the fuel reached the carbs, the mixture would actually be 25:1 ratio (which is richer in oil). The richer mixture of 25:1 is required/recommended for engine break-in so that the engine gets plenty of oil. After engine is completely broke-in the premix in the fuel tank is no longer needed. From there just make sure the oil tank on engine has oil.

Dealers generally don't know squat about what they're selling, other than what the brochure tells them. Anything anybody at a dealer "reckons" is probably advice you shouldn't take without a second opinion. The manual knows far more about the necessary break in procedures, that is what should be followed.

Hi,

would tend to agree with that, but then again, hind sight is a wonderful thing!

Too late, any damage is done, as its already run in without extra oil. Doesnt seem any the worse, although the oil injection system was fully bled and working perfectly throughout.
I'm kinda hoping the extra oil is a safety net incase injection pump fails.

If it stuffs up, its him who will be wearing the warranty claim.

I certainly hope theres no adverse affects.

Ron

Re: New motor break in

I would run the extra oil simply because it is common for the injection pump lines to have air bubbles in them from the factory. not to mention the fact that the last yamaha i bought was using almost no oil as the pump was set to low. even maxed out it was only pumping 100:1.

The double oil is used for other reasons than just oil pump failure...other-wise we wouldn't need the double oil in our pre-mix rebuilds...
If it OK, you got real lucky, and the signs may still show their ugly face at a later date and the warranty will be void if they know it wasn't double oiled for break-in....Good luck.

Well I was acting on dealers advice, thats all the unexperienced have to rely on, I specifically asked about it and he told me it did no good whatsoever.
I wish I had done it now, but him telling me not to do it, nor me not doing it isnt documented, so his word against mine.
So what signs would this show in future??
Only has 5hrs on it now, should I run some extra now or not worth it now?

(there was no bubbles in oil lines and its certainly using oil ok, tank down about 1 inch to approx 50ltrs fuel)

Ron

Further to above,

Just been back to dealer, voiced my concerns, and he stands by his decision, he agrees extra oil reqd if using cheap oil, but this is a variable oil injection engine, running not only Quicksilver oil, but Quicksilver Premium Plus oil, which he says is way superior American oil, and certainly doesnt need the extra.

Told me not to be concerned and that was his verdict.

Ron

Re: New motor break in

anyway motor is running perfect, no adverse affects, uses oil as it should, is a very fast motor, good on fuel, cant complain, dealer cant have been so wrong after all. If there were going to be any resulting probs theyd have shown by now,(and he'd be carrying it on warranty), although cant for life of me think on any, bores had plenty oil from variable injection as did cranks, and its all needle roller bearings which dont even need a lot of oil.
Dealer not just signed up either, been selling mercs for thirty years.

Anyway as I said it couldnt be better, even trolls great.

thanks
Ron

Re: New motor break in

The dealer knows enough to know 50:1 during break-in will cause just enough pre-mature wear, that the engine will be back most likely after warranty is up.....
This isn't the "first" rodeo I've been to, and what he told you is BS....
I was associated with a Merc dealer in Texas last year, in fact, they sent me to school on the DFI's and sterndrives....nothing has ever been said to me that it was OK to run 50:1 during break-in in an outboard (new).

Re: New motor break in

Everything I read from Evinrude said to use 50:1 premix in addition to the VRO. They have a very specific breakin routine and it lists the operation for each hourly interval. I suspect they have their reasons for keeping RPM at specified limits and using a 25:1 oil mix during the breakin period. They probably know what they are doing.

The rebuilder of my Evinrude included the exact same procedure with their warrantee paperwork.

Ron173, you might want to do a compression check so you know where the motor stands. And 5 hours runtime probably has not completed the brak-in proceedure for your Merc. Get the info from the owners manual and start running 25:1 regardless of what that dealer says.
