New Natural Gas Service Install Cost. Yikes!!!!

Bubba's post about propane prices last month got me to thinking. We have a propane wall furnace and cook stove and will be replacing our wood stove with a gas model this year. Our neighbor has had natural gas service for many years and the gas main is in the street about 300' from our house so I figured what the heck, I might as well look into what it would cost to get hooked up. It couldn't cost all that much right? Boy was I ever wrong! I called Pacific Gas & Electric a few days ago to find out what a ballpark price figure might be for them to install a new natural gas service. They just got back to me and said that the total cost would be right around $50,000.00 if you can believe it, I still can't. Needless to say, we will be burning propane here for the rest of our lives.

PG+E like all other companies hate to expand their underground infrastructure into previously unbuilt areas due to the fact that they will have to expend to much time dealing with the utilities that are already there.
Its something like subscribers/over cost = return/over years +- kinda sorta.

That's what I was thinking but there was no mistaking what Leslie from PG&E told me. They charge $100.00 per foot for new gas line installations and when you added on the cost of permits, surveys, and easements, she said we would be looking at a cost of $50,000.00. I think rbh is right and they just don't want to be bothered with running service to just 1 house.

SOunds about right... We were quoted $18,000 to put cable from the street to our home... I asked about gas when we first moved in since all our utilities are underground... Over $50,000

We decided on oil hot water baseboard... Much cheaper than propane...

I lucked out when I built my house and went to all natural gas for cooking and heating. Their program included a free gas boiler up to a certain size and would run the gas line from the street to the foundation for free. I did not qualitfy for the boiler because it had to be bigger then they offered, but I did save 3,000 on them running the gas line to the foundation.

The $100 a foot sounds about right for around here if the line is passing in front of your house. The rest is just BS or govenment.

A long time ago we had Southwest run 700' of pipe to our lot. Seems like it cost about $1,200. Over the years as people hooked up, we got our money back. At todays prices, we'd be using wood

Does this involve tearing any existing streets up to put the gas line in?
