well my habit continues.

picked up a 1976 Cobia 16’ bowrider yestersay with a very clean looking 75 Evinrude 50573B.

previous owner said the engine wasn’t running after a few trips of worsening idle and then a no start. All reads carbs to me but I got it for such a great price I couldn’t turn it down.

Anyway. Compression checked out surprisingly well. 120 dead on for both cyl. And actually had it fire up for a second. Carb rebuild kits are on the way along with fuel pump and a water pump kit (standard new motor procedure for me). A few questions for the pros out there on these older Rude boys:

- I’ m on the hunt for a factory service manual -

- there were two water pumps listed - I ordered the one With the housing because why not. But one was set as “with metal housing” and that confused me. Is there two different pumps? Or is that if someone wants to continue to use the old housing?

- seems there is no tell-tale on these old guys. But I’m debating buying a new cyl head from online because basically why not? Does the new part come pre-rapped for a tell tale? Or am I drilling regardless.

Im sure more questions to follow as I start tearing into it. Thanks in advance for the help.

The motor came with a metal housing water pump. At some future time they came with plastic housing with a stainless steel liner. The plastic pump kit also replaced the old metal one. Why? Because it's better. The metal ones gave some unpublished problems. Besides, with the liner you don't have to replace the whole thing in the future---just the impeller. So what to order depends on what's in there now.

Seems like everybody wants to watch their motor pee these days. Not really necessary but go ahead if that's your thing. I don't think the pee was taken off the head, was it?

Seen lots of motors with tell tales overheated.------Fitting for it comes off the exhaust cover I believe.

I wasn't sure where to drill and tap - i quick browsed an article i saw on here and it looked like the head above cyl #1 in the water jacket... but i may have been looking front.

Its not the tell tale per se that i'm looking for, more of some indication that there may be an overheat situation. Is there a warning buzzer or something of that nature on the engine that will alert me to an overheat? Or, is there a way to retrofit one.

There is a warning buzzer in the control box.-----Find the tan wire on the cylinder head.-----Slide the rubber boot away to expose metal.----Turn key to " on " position.-----Touch metal to head bolt.----Buzzer should sound.-

perfect - thank you on the heat sensor. Call me crazy but i'm not confident it's functioning. But that i can test tonight while i wait for parts and disassemble carbs and begin the soak.

I am ordering a service manual from eBay - should help with the process.

And the water pump makes sense as well - so the one i ordered with the new housing should get the job done.

Another question - is there a way to set up a tach besides one of those “tiny tach” units?

Couldn’t edit the above post - found this on a Tach install search.... will see what wires I have running

https://forums.iboats.com/forum/eng...40-installing-a-tachometer-on-an-old-evinrude

On a positive note I do have the buzzer and it did make a nice loud buzz when grounded out. Thanks for that...

- added thermostat, all gaskets, pressure relief etc and a head gasket as well. Figuring if I’m going to remove the screws that hold the head on why not replace the head gasket while I’m in there.

ill try and get some pictures up tonight.

Tried to upload pictures but getting errors based on size.

Ill get them onto photobucket or something later.

Had the first casualty of the rehab - broken shift linkage under the carb noticed while trying to remove LU. I noticed a little crack... but once I pulled down on the LU it finished it’s sheering.

Found on eBay for $13 and replacement on the way.

Carbs came off without incident and carb 1 is soaking awaiting rebuild kit. They were pretty gummed up.

I did get it idleing with the fast lever pushed up -though it seemed high, no tach, couldn’t tell - would stumble and fall if I backed it off. It did shift between forward and reverse - but tightly.

Sorry if a long running thread is annoying - I will start new threads for any specific issues.
