New......old one

A couple of duck seaons ago I asked for some advice on a 1976 6 HP Johnson. Thanks again. It was a solid motor. My 12 ft. Carsten Bluebill went hunting quite a bit with it. However, there just wasn't quite enough power to plane the boat loaded with decoys so it took awhile getting to some of by favorite spots. The boat is designed to run at a max. 9 HP.

To make this shorter, I found a 1965 9.5 Low-profie short shaft Johnson (model # MQ-11C) that has been taken care plus it has very few hours in it. The seller had it on his pontoon boat as a kicker and ran it once this spring. Looks like it has been stored inside regularly. Northern Illinois is not a 12 month boating season. There are no scratches and the original prop has zero "dings". The gas tank is a new remote 5 gal. In fact, the motor looks new and runs like it too! When I bought the 1976 6 HP Johnson (used a lot and it showed), I learned these old motors still have a lot left in them.

The only thing I had to do was adjust the latch on the motor cover.....it was very loose and came off easily....on its own. Many years ago my Dad had a low profile Johnson and I had forgotten how the dull click indicated the cover was securely latched. When I closed the latch for the first time on this motor, I knew from a very old memory.....it was fixed. Now all I have left is to load up the boat with decoys plus my dog to see if it planes out.

Was $375 too much for a 1965 9.5 Johnson Short Shaft in mint condition or was it a good deal?

Re: New......old one

if in the condition you say it is in, i would say you did OK, did you replace the impeller, good time to do it.
