New guy checking in here. Just took delivery of my new to me '75 Cheiftain Mark IV.

Looks like she is going to need some new floors and a smattering of other little details.
Has the 188 Merc, witch the oil looks a little milky, but doesn't have any signs of cracks. Looking for some input. More pics and details when I get some more time.:)

I've been a lurker for sometime, and after reading some of the rebuild threads on here decided to go with an aluminum boat. Just happened to stumble on this beauty a couple of weeks ago on c-list.Am looking forward to getting to work on the old girl. After working all night last night, and with today's festivities; haven't been able to get a whole lot accomplished.:(

Re: New old Starcraft owner checking in.

Got quite a bit done today, she got a bath and cleaned up the rails and other little shiny bits.

Did learn today that the little stainless screws they like to use don't fasten things very well.Found many of them loose when cleaning the boat.

Also pulled all the spark plugs; everything looks good so far.

Re: New old Starcraft owner checking in.

that is really a gorgeous boat. you done good. i see it has the all-important First and Second Mate Seal of Approval. do i dare ask what you gave for her?

if floors are toast, check transom closely. unfortunately i think floor replacement in these require removal of rear cabin bulkhead; someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

and wait til you pull on your bow cleat and it comes off in your hand.....

Re: New old Starcraft owner checking in.

Thanks!!:) Paid 2900 for her.PO did replace both cabin bulkheads, put a new ceiling in the cabin, and did the gimbal bearing, bellows, and impellor last fall. Floors are soft; but everything is dry, even the foam down in bottom of the boat is dry and intact. I did take a good look at the transom, and everything looks good and solid except for one small spot. Still has a nice coat of white paint on it.:p But I will have to pull both fuel tanks to get at the edges of the floor, since it has 2 18 gallon units in the gunwales (both in very good shape). Other than the floors, just alot of small details to spruce up. Can't wait to get her in the water.:)

Got the engine oil changed today;didn't look too bad.:) Was hoping to get her fired up today, but checked the oil in the the outdrive but it appears to be empty. Looks like that's going to have to wait until Tuesday.

Got the outdrive oil changed today, and it looked good also.:) Lit the motor up, and she runs nice and smooth.Hopefully will be splashing it here in a couple weeks. Now I just have to rewire my trailer since my pup developed an appetite for trailer wiring.

How long since that boat's seen water? You may want to install a new impellar in that outdrive before you take her out. They get funky if they set for a while....

NB has a point. On the muffs the water is being forced under pressure up the pump and through the block.
In the water, the impellar is on its own to pull water in.

Re: New old Starcraft owner checking in.

The PO said last summer.I asked him about the impeller after learning that they should be changed out every couple of seasons; He said he had a new one put in last fall when the gimbal bearing and bellows was done.

Re: New old Starcraft owner checking in.

Finally splashed her today with the little boat gremlin following me around everywhere I went. Boat ran good except for a few hiccups like having the wrong fuel tank (the one that needs drained and cleaned) in the on position causing a little rough running and stalling a couple of times. and the starter didn't catch; just made a loud whirr a few time when I tried to fire it up. Lessons learned today:
1.If I ever catch that little boat gremlin; I'm going to beat the little turd to oblivion with an oar.
2.Really need to replace the V block on my trailer with a roller (Hook on my winch grabbed it, and flipped it over causing a real nightmare trying to get it on and off the trailer.)
3.The rain likes to follow me.
Other than that, was a good day.:)
btw, the temp gauge sat at 160 the whole time on the lake.
