Mods, I realize that by all rights this question belongs in the "Boat topics and questions" section but my question has specifically to do with an OMC 6 gallon tank and new primer ball. I feel strongly that the non repair outboard section will yield me a better response. Apologies in advance if you decide to move this anyways.

I bought an unused OMC gas tank that was originally purchased in 1988 from Bass Pro shops. Today I took out a 9.5 johnson I have been working on for it's first sea trials. I mixed 3 gallons of fuel. The new primer ball assy (Atwood) seems to be drawing air along with fuel. The arrow on the ball was the right way,

Later at home I took a primer/line assy from my other tank and switched the plastic tank connector for a brass (bronze?) OMC connector so I could test the line from my other tank. This line also seems to be drawing air (it's fine with the other tank).

I disconnected the fuel pickup assembly from the tank and from visual inspection it looks good but I feel the air may be coming from the top of the pick up tube.

At this point I am at work and unsure of what to do next. Please, someone with any experience chime in with some help!!!

After some thought I think the new primer ball is the issue. The old one I said drew in some air but it was just a touch and only when I fully compressed the ball. I'm a little upset because the assembly cost me close to $50 and I doubt I can return it after filling it with fuel!!

I own an OMC tank from a 1981 OB and replaced the primer bulb + hoses for approx $ 10. about 5 years ago. Time takes it toll on those rubber hoses, if there is no gas/oil mix in them. Guess air does it.

Well it looks like my new tank as well as my new primer ball/line are probably just fine. I think I blew a head gasket since today I found plenty of water in my lower cylinder. Being a flat head I really hope it's just a bad head gasket ;) I'll feel better about this motor I've been working on with a new head gasket to go along with the updated ignition and clean carb!! Of course warped head would be a heartbreaker.
