My brother in law just inherited his Dad's old 1979 17 foot Double Eagle runabout. He wants to re-power it rather than spend money on the tired old merc 90 hores 2 stroke that's on it.
He is thinking of buying a new merc 90 4 stroke so he won't have to deal with the associated problems of an older motor. I suggested a used camp motor as I see them locally for a very good price. They are generally 2 years old with 1800 - 2000 hours used in salt water. A new 90 ELPT is about $11,000 a 2 year old camp motor is about $5,000.
Is a new 90 4 stroke much heavier and bigger than an old 2 stroke 90?
We fish salmon in the salt so the salt water motor is no worry.
What would you guys suggest?

iwould first make sure the boat is sound, and not water logged, or eaten up with rot, with it being a 1979. the 4 stroke 90 is much heavier, then the 2 stroke. more service, and not as owner friendly for service than the older 2 strokes.

this may shed more light also; http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=219751

I agree with you that the price savings is significant. But be aware that in most cases, the motors are worked on by the camps, and any significant problems with the motor aren't necessarily reported to the company that you buy it from.

The best advise I'd give you is to obtain a serial # before you buy it, and have the manufacturer run the # to see if there has been any warranty work done on it. And/or, run the motor yourself before paying for it.

Good luck!

IMO, find a new or newer 2 stroke...its cheaper, lighter, has more power, and requires less maintence.

I would want a in water test first. Could have had a lot of abuse as well. Be careful but you could save a lot of money as well.

I would stay with a 2 stroke. The 4 strokes are good for trolling but thats it at W.O.T there no better. 2 stroke are easy to take care of and there cheap if you want new I would get a yamaha. but you can still get a mercury 2 stroke for $5900
