New Outboard Installation-How hard is it?

I am thinking of ordering a new four stroke outboard for my pontoon as it offers a great savings over my local dealer. I would prefer to do business locally, but he cannot touch the price. Can a shade tree mechanic (at best) handle this project? I will have to change all cables and controlls in addition to motor. I have the ability to lift the motor with no problem. I am sure their are some suprises awaiting me. Any "been there" suggestions? Any thoughts and hints would be appreciated. Installing a 115HP on a pontoon boat. Thanks.

Piece of cake for a high stepper.

Just pay attention to what you take apart, to make sure you put it back.

You do need a lift to handle the motor removal and installation. I have found by experience that handling an outboard over a 70hp is dangerous. Hard to get a hold of and handle with brother-in-law type help. Need a good lift.

Arlan

I should mention that the wiring changes for tilts, starting, kill switches, etc are the most difficult to put back. Take your time.

Arlan

I do not have tilt trim on the old motor. Nor does it have a kill switch. I will be starting from scratch on that aspect. I have a binnicle (sp?) mount throtle and transmission controls. Key switch is seperate.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Sandman,

If you have never done it before then I would suggest that you get the manufacturers shop manual. It is going to take you through ALL of the set up procedures/checks.

It won't be cheap, but you do not want to make a mistake on something that expensive.

I am still shopping also, let me know if you find a good deal on Honda.
The manual is a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sandman, Be sure to specify that you want all the controls and cables, as well as electrical controls and a prop.
