My mercruiser outdrive needs rebuilding and after looking up and pricing all the parts I have come to the conclusion that it would probably be smarter to just replace the whole upper . So I'm looking at the SE106, UPPER 1.94.

My main question is what does the 1.94 stand for ? Is this some kind of gear ratio ? The reason I ask is because there are several of these like 1.62,1.81 ?

Also do any of you have experience with these outdrives
Thanks

Yes, that's the gear ratio

What is the reason for the replacement? If the gears went bad in the upper or something tore up you will have metal inside that could ruin the lower after replacing just the upper.

You had to have pulled the cap off the upper gear housing to diagnose the problem as it needing replaced, do you have a picture of the damage?

Re: new outdrive upper

That is indeed a gear reduction ratio calculated on both sets of gears, upper and lower. However, it will only be 1.94:1 if you have a tooth count in the lower housing of 13:21. If you have an older lower housing with the original 17:28 gears, then the overall ratio will be 1.98:1. The 1.98 (and 1.94) ratio was only ever used with the small 4 cylinder engines 120/2.5l and 140/3.0l... Or as the high altitude ratio for the 470s and earlier V6s....

You might find THIS elucidating...

The drive shaft and yoke assembly needs replacing . Parts cost almost as much as a new upper . So it seems stupid not to replace the whole thing.
Actually I've decided to just replace the whole out drive . The thing is 40 years old so I guess it's about time .

???? 1983 to 2014... That's 31 years, not 40...

yea ok so at 6 am my math skills aren't that great . Still 31 years is pretty old for any part of a boat . Just seems to make sense to replace the whole thing .
