I just got a 2007 bayliner 195 with a 3.0 mericruiser (carbed) with an alpha one out drive. It runs very smoothly but when I shift back into neutral from forward or reverse, it hesitates and stumbles like it wants to stall. It doesn't though. If this a normal occurance with the shift interrupter?

Also, the trailer has surge brakes that do not slow down the boat. The dealer said most people don't repair them. If this is acceptable, can I use a bolt or something to make the unit stop sliding?

Is there any other problems/ common issues to expect from this setup/engine?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Check the link about the shift interrupter: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1930449#post1930449

If you surge brake is a 'Tie-Down' brand make sure to grease the sliders and check the fluid level in the master cylinder. If fluid level is down there may be air in the lines and you would need to bleed the brakes. Are they disc or drum brakes?
Drums and associated parts get corroded and start sticking.

Tighten all hose clamps on engine. Change to outdrive oil and as you do check for milky oil which would indicate water is getting into the outdrive. Lube the grease fittings on the outdrive. Torque the two 9/16 nuts at the top of the outdrive to 55ft lbs. - read everything you can about the drive and engine. Be sure to read the Adult section at the top of this forum.

Thank you very much for the infomation. The link was very helpful for the the shift interupter. I think the cable might be slightly sticking prolonging the ignition cut off time. I'll have to lub it along with checking out the condition of it.

The trailer is a drum brake system which is/will be used in saltwater so I'm not sure if I should put the cash into fixing the brake system. The total weight is only around 3,500 lbs so it isn't a big neccessity. Should I just adjust the slider on it so that it doesn't slide or put the cash into fixing what ever is wrong with it?

3500# means trailer brakes are a "big" necessity in most states. While your tow vehicle may very well be able to stop that load, should you end up in an accident a shyster attorney would likely go after you for equipment violations.

Don't go lubing the lower shift cable. That causes more problems than it stops. If the cable is sticking, replace it.

As far as the trailer problem, might want to start a thread on that over in the Trailers and Towing forum.
