Hey, just got a new to me boat.. Its a Starcraft Falcon 14 with a 30hp Yamaha

a few questions,

any way to tell the exact year? i know it looks like a 68 from the brochure, but they look the same 68-71?

How fast should I go with this motor? I took it out today and hit 25mph, does this sound right, i assumed it would go a little faster.

what would it do with a 40hp?

I look forward to restoring this classic to my tastes, and making it a fishing machine and will post pics before, during and after

ok it looks like the original paint is orange, therefore its a 1971, because in 1972, they called it a sunbird... still learning

here it is

Hey welcome WC! Congrat's on the purchase and looking forward to the coming restore!!!

25 mph sounds a bit low... but not totally out line. Do you know what you are revving at that speed?? Perhaps a prop change to a different pitch would do the trick.

All the best!

Re: New Owner 60s Falcon 14

ok to revive the thread, starting to redo floor and transom.. Pulled out old floor, 3/4" wet plywood with 1x6 pressure treated deck boards around it.... under the floor was supported with PT 2x6s and more deck boards..... pulled out atleast 50 pounds of wood aside from the floor...

Now there is no foam and no center rail (Z channel?) How important is this? If I am planning on putting pink foam in there to support the floor, does the aluminum channel do much to support it?

what If I replaced the floor with 3/4 would it be stiff enough?

thanks.

I would really want the center stringer in it. More importantly how corroded is the hull since it had pt ply on it maybe you got lucky and that was done long ago before ply was treated with copper.

Some pics of the inside of the hull would be great so we can give you an educated SWAG on the deck support issues. I can give you my advice on the subject. I would not rely on loosely laid in foam alone for support and anything over 24"-36" of a span for plywood, even for 3/4" 7 layer marine grade ply it's a stretch. The next issue is that the deck support beams also tie in all the ribs, then the decking ties into the ends of the ribs. Your boat also has the molded in splash rails that need some support by the way of hull stiffeners. It's kind of a domino effect when you take out or move one structural piece of your hull.

working on pics.. I was very lucky there is no corrosion from the PT wood, slight powder where it rubbed through the paint, but still solid.. and no holes other than the bolt holes.

would i have to get the center rib custom made? or is it something i can do myself? Any alternatives to aluminum for it?

You might need to make the central stringer out of more then 1 continous piece of DIY Z-channel. I think most of the SC's have a taper to the Z-channel....

Short at the transom, getting taller towards the helm then tapering down at the boat.

More accurately, the top of the stringer is flat fore & aft, it's the bottom that falls away as it approaches the helm from the transom and then rises back up as it approaches the bow......

Kind of like this:

The stringer in my 1968 Falcon is 8' long, 1.5" tall at the transom and 4.5" tall where it ends under the dash.

Well there ya go, tapered but not at both ends. Still going to be more then 1 piece, unless you've got an 8ft+ break

i can't imagine trying to guesstimate the dimensions to make floor set level, 8' brake or no. mebbe you could talk LSn2SB into tracing his for you, or measuring it at every rib?

Re: New Owner 60s Falcon 14

looks like I will measure it at every rib..... and somehow make myself a brake... What thickness of aluminum should i use?

Got the transom off today, which leads to another question, what do i do with the 8 or so transom holes that are not needed?

Re: New Owner 60s Falcon 14

you can fab that stringer by bolting a 2x4 to a piece of aluminum and smacking it with a dead-blow hammer....it doesn't have to be pretty...just straight.

Take two pieces of 3/4"x8' aluminum angle and a 4.5" tall x8' long piece of aluminum. Trim the 4.5" piece and rivet the two 3/4" angles to it. I'm covering the extra holes in my transom by bonding 2" squares of thin aluminum with 3m5200 to the inside of the transom.

With big holes like that I would put a bolt slathered in 5200 in them.

EXTACTLY! That is how I would fab it up too. :thumb:

Re: New Owner 60s Falcon 14

sounds like that might be a good idea... now where to find the aluminum... and 1/8 rivets or 3/16?

and 1/8 aluminum?

thanks... Awesome resource we have here!
