New Owner...basic questions..

Last year, I purchased a Pontoon boat that has a Johnson 90hp outboard motor. Although it sits out of the water on a "lift" and I have properly treated the gas for the winter, but I want to make sure I've done any water "draining" that some of my friends keep asking me about. I see no plugs or ways to drain any water that is/might be in the lower housing and would appreciate any suggestions or help. The original owner is deceased and didn't get any kind of maintenance books. Your comments would be appreciated. THANKS. :)

UPDATE: Thanks to all who responded. I contacted the manufacturer with the model number, year model and other basic information only to be told I needed to advise whether it was a 90 or 180 degree engine. Yea, right...like I'd know and the boat is 70 miles away. All I would like to have is a picture of the motor and the location of the areas that I should either grease or where to check the lower unit gear housing for contaimination. If someone has a schematic or drawing or whatever might help would be appreciated. ;)

Just keep the Motor in the Down position when stored. Drain and refill lower unit lube, using new seals when installing drain and fill screws. Check the link below for Winterizing tips!

Winterizing

Winterizing 2

And a Manual that you can order below will outline all you need to know about maintaining your Motor. These are Factory Manuals and well worth it. They deliver in 2 Days! Good Luck,

Factory Manual

Just to add to Rick's comments. Outboards are self draiing. As long as the motor is in the down position, all water will drain out.

The only concern is if water has seeped into the the lower unit gear housing. Hence the need to drain and refill the lower unit lube prior to winter.

Good luck!

And just to add, if when you drain the lower unit and the fluid is a white milky color, then you have a lower unit seal bad or something else causing the water to get in.

Get 1 Quart of Lower Unit Lube from Dealer (Hi-Vis) and New seals for the screws.
Remove Vent Screw, Remove Drain Screw and let it drain, noting if the oil is "Milky" looking. Also check draining oil for Metal shavings. After it's drained, put new Washer/Seals on Screws and keep them handy. Fill Lower Unit from the Drain/Fill plug(Lower Screw) until it seeps out the Vent(Top Screw). While keeping pressure on the fill container, install the Vent Plug. Remove fill container and replace Drain plug quickly. You're Done!
