HI All,
I am new to this forum, and really hope I can learn some invaluable advise from all of you. I recently just purchased a 1994 Bayliner Carpi 1850. This is my first boat, besides the pontoon that my family has had at our cabin forever!! I was hoping some of you could clue me on what items I should be ready to purchase immediately? Maybe some tips specific to my year/model? Anything at all would be helpful, I am taking a safe boating course soon.....just want some guidance

Hey LCG, welcome to iboats!! :)

I am going to move this post up to the Boating section. You'll definitely get more help there despite the request for brand specific info. Good luck. You could probably post your ladder question there as well.

No-one knows what you've already got so how can anyone say what you need,?

got a paddle? radio? flares?
are you going in fresh or saltwater?

too many questions, not enough info.

Priority one get legal registration and safety gear.
Canvas cover if you don't already have one.
Extra key, floating keychain
A good mooring rope

lcg, you'll find much of the info you are looking for when you go to safety class.
another great source of all kinds of boating info can be found in a book called chapmans piloting. this book is the cats meow for info on boating. it's very thick and quite expensive as books go. but the info is great... maybe check out the liabrary, bet they'd have a copy..

Welcome to the board.
Try to reply to everyone who leaves you a message.
First is it a I/O or Outboard.
I would start checking the basic saftey gear.
A fire extinguser is a must even for a outboard.
A extra plug or two is a good idea.
Life jacket for everyone the right size and a good fits. Also a couple of spares for guest.
Every boat should have a good anchor with lots of line.
A good first aid kit. A dock line for the bow and stern.
Make sure the navigation lights work.
If it is a I/O then make sure it has a flame arester and the bildge blower works. Also make sure the bildge blower has a hose that goes below the engine.
Check the Fuel lines and gas tank and smell around the boat for fumes.
I think every boat should have a Boat hook and at least 2 fenders.
If your handy at all then should have a tool box on board.

When you go to the Coast Guard Aux class or the US Power Squardons Class take you whole crew even kids 9 or older. They might not pass the class but they will learn a lot.

Your first trips go when the weather is good without a lot of wind or heavy seas. Also try to get there at a time when the ramp is not real busy for a trip or two.

Before going out the first time get some muff to supply water to your motor and fire it up so you know the battery is not dead. Make sure you know how to trim and tilt the motor. Check the water pump indicator to make sure it pumping water. Check all the guages to make sure the battery is charging and the motor is not overheating. Make sure you have enough fuel. Make sure the steering wheel turns and the shifter will put the motor in foward and reverse. Take it easy on the first trip and have lots of FUN.
Do not DrinK and Drive.
