Well it runs... :D

Got new oil in it today, put some fresh gas with seafoam in a 1 gallon can and went to crankin.. With water of course..

After dumping a few spray can caps worth of fuel down the carb with the intermittent running/sputtering, I pulled the inlet line. No fuel. I blow into it, bubbles in the gas can. Hmmmm...
I pull the other end out of the can, blow into it. I can feel it pushing some fuel up.. Got some in the carb now, I can hear the accelerator pump pushing liquid...
Fires off, jumps to about 1500 (smooth tho) runs for about 10 seconds and dies. I repeat this for about 5 minutes. Now I hear the accelerator pump gurgling.. Won't start any longer. I blow into the puckup end again, filling the carb, and off we go. It doesn't like to idle.. Been sitting a while and needs the seafoam at a minimum, may need carb overhauled.
So, I'm thinking my fuel pump is shot.. Sound right? If so, where can I get one for less than the $150 dougrussel.com wants..???
Can I rebuild this one? Can I go electric? If so, what about the return vent?

And Chief, I'll get a pick of the inside transom area today and you can tell me what "shift" I've got.. :D

Before you go and spend money lets make sure what the problem is. First take a pic of the fuel pump and post it.

Please don't start another thread i'm a old geezer and it would be easier for me to see it all in this thread, i went and reread your old thread and now am up to speed.

That carb needs rebuilding in my opinion. It's all gummed up and no amount of snake oil gonna help.

The fuel pump my be shot but it could be gummed up also. I don't know what kind you have was not in the pics of the last post.

But i did see a fuel water separator did you dump it.

You put the hose straight into the tank from the fuel pump nothing in between correct??

If not all gummed up you can pressure test the fuel pump 4-6 psi i believe is what the pump gotta give.

There is a filter in the fitting that enters the carb you cleaned it?

Here's the pics.. I'm sure your right about the carb, but I'm making sure my $500 deal is a deal, not a glorified anchor.. :D

I did NOT dump the water separator, I'll do that now. I put the hose in the temp tank, through a walmart fuel filter, then the water seperator. I just unhooked the tank line at the seperator and put a temp line in with another inline filter.. Looks like;

<gas can>------<wally filter>-----<water sep>-------<pump>------<carb>

The filter in the carb is brand new.. I had to get the whole fitting as it was missing when I got the boat.

gas can - fuel pump and carb nothing else. Latter after it's running it's tank-fuel water separator- fuel pump carb.

Check the fitting at the carb has a filter in there.

Is this pump rebuildable?

I'll have to get another fitting to cut the seperator out of the loop, it's fitted steel line from seperator to pump.

I really don't think that will change the result tho. I can fill the seperator with fuel, then blow in the gas can-end, and fill up the bowl in the carb. I check this by pushing the accelerator pump. After putting pressure on the can-end for 10-15 seconds, The engine will run for 20 seconds, then die.. At that point, the accelerator pump just spits air, until I refill the seperator and blow into the can-end again.
I'll grab a cheap little electric pump this week. That way I can at least keep it running to test the mechanical pump. Then we'll know for sure. I'm not hopeful on it though.

As for the carb... Should I get a rebuild kit and put in it??... Or should I take it somewhere to be rebuilt..??? What's the difference.?? I can follow directions and replace parts, but I'm no carb guy....

I did figure out all the plugs and caps to pull to get the water back out tho.. It's supposed to be in the low 50's this weekend so I'll get back on it then.

Fuel pump is shot can try test it?

E-bay has them, give it a look. Buy new. Nope don't try to rebuild it.

You know auto zone can order one marine though. Bring it with you.

Again marine one. Carb kit also when your there rebuild it.

Sir : you don't need to be told this ,but you have done everything right.

Ebay always seems to have the part i need 1/3-1/2 off local guys.

Carb idle is clogged while your waiting why not clean/ rebuild the carb.

Can carb cleaner, and compressed air, kit 15-20 bucks and your ready when the pump comes. Napa, auto zone will have it. Take the numbers off the carb when you go to buy it.

Yea I think I'll get a kit for it. I know it needs it with the time it's been sitting. I just get a little anxious about carbs.. I'll definitely have some questions..

What's good to soak the metal parts in to help clean? Would laquer thinner be of use? Will it help with the varnish or powdery scale?

I pulled the carb off, pulled it apart, and the inside is pristine... Looks like it was just rebuilt. I'm gonna put it back on and run it. If it gives me issues then I'll soak it and kit it.

What about the intake? Is this marine specific or will any old SBC intake work? I see some cheap aluminum performers on ebay... Mine is a tad rusted in the throat, only imagine what the passages look like.

Getting anxious waiting for the pump??

Cheap electric dc fuel pump from any auto store that gives between 4-6 psi will get it running, put a switch on it and run it straight from the battery.

But only for getting it started and testing purposes understand?

Hit the switch for fuel to flow and turn off the switch when you shut off the motor.

You can leave the old pump on the boss to block off the hole so oil don't go shooting everywhere.

Yes I am getting anxious.. :D

I went looking for a cheap electric to test with but there are nono here. I'd spend close to what I paid for the mech. pump, so I'll just wait.

I know it runs, and was sounding real good while the carb had fuel in it, so that gives me some relief.

One other question. In the engine area, on the port and starbord sides out toward the hull, there are plastic lids in the floor...? One is about 8-10" and looks more like a pool filter cover, the other is smaller and looks like a sewer clean-out access....??? What would these be for?

Well, here's the other shoe...

Inside is wet, ugly, black, wood... I left the caps off to see if it helps dry any, but you can see it's been soaked for some time. I was told the boat has a new floor, I guess I'll be finding out next winter if I keep it. The whole area under the engine is aluminum plate bolted to the stringers. I'll get a pic tomorrow for all to see. The motor mounts bolt through the aluminum, but based on the stringers I can see, I guess the mounts aren't being held but the best wood.
Oh well.. If it deems itself worthy through the summer, then I'll dig deeper. Otherwise someone else can.
