I recently purchased a 1974 70hp evinrude model# 70473 and am wonderintg what the difference is between the service manual and the owners manual? Will the service manual give me all the info thats in the owners manual plus some? Is a parts manual needed if one has the service manual?

The service manual will tell how to fix and repair your outboard. The owners manual will tell you how to operate it. Parts manual is not required thanks to the internet you can look up the parts online at a number of different sites. If you purchase a service manual buy the OMC/BRP service manual for your outboard do not waste your money on a third party book.

Took your advice and purchased the original service manual along with the owners manual. The owners manual cost me about a dollar per page but it does provide some information I didn't know. I've been reluctant to post having seen all the 'buy the service manual' responses. Thanks for the CDI trobleshooting link, I'm having some tach issues I may be able to figure out using the info provided in the link.
