New pontoon design

Hi all,

I'm designing a pontoon (kind of a dock more likely), size Length 10meters (32.80ft); Width 3meters (9.84ft), Thickness 2mm. I would like to hear idea wheter placing outboard engine or marine engine? How much horse power would be fit in?

NOTE: From Cambodia, designing this pontoon for helping the health care service to people in Tonle Sap River.

Sounds like a major project, good luck with it. For ease of maneuvering and maintenance, I would think an outboard would be the preferred power. As to the horsepower, more information on weight, river currents and traffic patterns and hoped for speed would be needed. With enough data I am sure the people on this forum could provide you with a lot of useful information.

Also how many logs and what diameter the logs will be.

Assuming this will be run on a river so at least a 90 but a 150 would be better yet, that is ALOT of boat and running into current will take alot of power and go with an outboard just for the ease of design, an I/O will really complicate things.

Thank you all much,

The pontoon was made up of Fiber glass, It weigh about 2.5t. This pontoon is not necessary need for speed. Its log are H=80cm(31.50inch) W=50cm(19.68inch), it has 2 logs.

Will out board 250Horse power will do the job of moving this pontoon? Please kindly help this out.

Yes,it is major humanitarian project to help the poor in Cambodia. As I already post the thinness ,length, width and logs. Could you please help more input about what engine would really best fit?

I would personally think a minimum of 125 hp, because river currents can be tricky. 250 hp may be beyond what is required, but that depends on the final weight when fully loaded.

Finally it floats ok with Nissan Marine Engine 33Hs. It serving the needed people in Tonle Sap of Cambodia now.
