Truck and pontoon.jpg

Just wanted to give eveyone who gave me advice and all who answered my questions about purchasing a pontoon. We got it! We are proud owners of a 1989 24' Grumman pontoon. It seats 12, has a bimini, 90hp Evinrude motor, stereo, grill and came with a scissor trailer. In my opinion, we got a steal on this pontoon. The carpet and floor is in great shape. The pontoon itself isn't in perfect condition (scratches on sides and pontoons, faded paint, but other than that it looks great for being 23 years old) The seats need some work (reupholstering and a few screws came out of the hinges) but it's ok to use for now with towels over them. The canopy has a few stitches that need to be fixed but nothing that a little duct tape can't fix. :)
We took it out both Saturday and Sunday and had a few issues with it restarting after shutting it off. We eventually got it started but with being first time pontoon owners, we got a little scared that it wouldn't start. We've noticed that there must be an electrical issue because when we tried starting it after being anchored, the ignition sometimes got stuck. Also, the stereo cuts out when using the USB port after about 10 minutes. My daughter and her fiance are stereo buffs so they will take care of that issue.
Other than those minor issues, we LOVE it! We love the scissor trailer and my boyfriend had no problem pulling it out of the water in 4-wheel drive on the all sand boat landing near where we live. This is an investment will will enjoy for years to come.

I do have another question. We have a black lab and he loves to go on the pontoon and loves to go swimming but it's so hard to get him back in the boat. I was thinking of getting a dog ramp for the pontoon just for him but don't know if there was any other option instead of buying a $300 dog ramp. I did go and buy him a life vest yesterday because he got so tired swimming and there is no rest platform for him so the vest gives him a way to rest and float.

While not the most stylish they do make life jackets for pets that have a handle on top.

Thats awsome! We too just got our first pontoon boat about 2 weeks ago and like you we bought an older one that needs a bit of TLC. It is a 1991 sun tracke party barge 21 foot. The pontoons have some leaking issues but thats no big deal as I can weld aluminum but thats what made it so affordable. Enjoy your boat and congrats. We sure are

The life vest I bought for him does have straps on top but they are flimpsy and don't know how long they will last. I've been really thinking alot about this because I want the time on the pontoon to be enjoyable for him as well. I might just engineer a platform for him and like the previous poster suggested, attach life vests to it so it floats. I was thinking of just getting a small peice of plywood and putting carpet on it and then attaching it to the pontoon with rope. Easy enough but don't know if it will work or not.

don't know about the handle, I'd need a crane to lift my sisters 100# lab out of the water...... I really like the ramp with a floatie at the end idea!

Congratulations to you new pontoon owners. I too am a happy owner of new (to us) pontoon. Actually it's our first pontoon, been boating for decades. We bought a '08 Sun Tracker Party Cruiser. We have a 100 pound Lab that we need to figure out how to get her aboard easier. I recently had major back surgery so my wife is on her own ! Our Lab is older so she can't even get her front paws on deck when we're beached. We are thinking some kind of long ramp that would store under the forward deck.

Sounds like a great find and a great package. A 90HP motor should move that along pretty good and be decent on gas when you are at part throttle. I too have been looking at dog ramps, but they are indeed expensive. I am planning on building one, if my dog ever decides she likes the water..

Side note.. don't use duct tape for the canopy. It won't stick for beans after the sun has been beating on it. Either take the opportunity to learn to stitch it up, or head for your local crafts store and get some iron-on patches. If you end up stitching, make sure you make your stitch well wider than the opening, otherwise canvas of that age is likely to rip the stitches right out.
