1998 150 merc 6 cyl. I posted recently about my oil pump drive gear being stripped. I bypassed the oil injection system and ran the engine on 50:1 mix only to find out that I have a lower unit problem with the gearing. I was told by my marine machanic that the power head needs to be repaired to remove the plastic pieces from the head. I am now considering replacing the power head instead of rebuilding.Doe anyone have an opinion on wether I should purchase a new power head or repair the existing one? I am hoping that the lower unit can be rebuilt. Should I consider a new merc? Hull is a 19ft. Robalo cc wich is in very good shape.

Check out the other options, they have factory rebuilt power heads, as Tim said it depends on your wallet. Look for sales on leftovers, Ask about the warrente, (excuse my spelling) but as you know it's hard to beat new. Good luck, Joe

Remember to factor in that the new motors get allot better fuel mileage, so that is something to consider nowadays!!!!!
I would look closely at repair cost/ new motor cost. Also with the new one, you have warranty...........

Hello Irishflies,

Marine Solutions has an Electronic Oil Injection system that drives your oil pump with a computer controlled electric motor. The kit installs in about one hour. There is no need to take apart the powerhead and remove the plastic gear. You can see the kit at www.go2boating.com. Call Howard at Moto-Ventures in Phillipsburg, NJ for his recommendation 908-859-2116.

I like Robot 19's solution or just stay with premix--which is most dependable for most people.
About the only harm the gear pieces could do is plug an oil passage; they're not tough enough to damage metal.
