I just got my new power trim assembly in the mail today (Part number 826729A08) to replace a trashed unit. The new kit comes with trim relays that I guess replace the trim solenoids. What is the purpose of these relays? Do they last longer/ more reliable than solenoids? I have a Commander 2000 controller so it looks like I could hook it up directly with the trim motor wires to the solenoids instead of using the new included relays? Do I need to use the relays, are they an improvement over solenoids? thanks, jeff.

Motor is 89 Mariner 75hp OC170850 in case this is important.

Re: New Power Trim Kit ? Relays

Your old system probably had a 3-wire trim motor that can be used with simple solenoids. Newer 2-wire trim motors require the more complex relays. 3-wire motors send 12v+ power to either the blue (for up) or green (for down) wire with the black serving as common ground. 2-wire motors use the same two wires (both up and down) and reverse polarity to them instead.
