I have been going over the boat for a few days now, trying to determine if I should replace the engine or not, anyway, I discovered another problem. Hot water coming out of the bell housing (by the starter) Just a trickle in idle but the flow increases with RPM. Do I have a leaking exhaust bellows or is it something more.

My 1st Guess would be a Rusted Out Core Plug,........
There are a few Behind the Flywheel.........

Well, you could look real hard for the leak, but I think Bondo is right.....If you are referring to the exhaust bellow in the drive, no......I know I've seen you post before, but forget what you have.....Anyway, I really doubt that it has anything to do with your exhaust, and you will most likely need a starter soon....JK

Re: New problem found

the reason I am thinking it may not be a core plug is that there is no change in engine temp. Am I correct in assuming that if a core plug goes, I would lose too much water to keep the engine cool? I would really like it to be the bellows, a lot cheaper and easier to repair. The engine is a 1977 Mercruiser 250HP (Chevy) 5.7L

If your engine is raw water cooled, the water doesn't care where it gets out.....Just that it does....The core plug is not gone....Yet.....Actually the core plug would be cheaper parts wise.. :D Pulling the engine isn't really that hard if you have the space in your yard....Sorry, it isn't your bellows....Wishful thinking isn't gonna cure that....JK

The exhaust does not dump into the bellhousing anywhere along the line, or is it hooked to it in any way, shape or form. So forget that idea completely.
Now if you are absolutly sure the water is coming out of the bellhousing, it has to be from a core plug or a cracked block. It may be the exhuast Y itself. If it has a hole at the top, it could be blowing water up onto or into the bellhousing and then running down and dripping off the bellhousing itself. Either way, the engine has to come out. That exhaust Y can't be removed with the engine still in the boat.
