OK so long story short maybe. I have another post related to the water separator issue.

My engine was starting on the first try pretty much after I replaced the head gasket a few months back. a few weeks ago I added an inline (glass) fuel filter and started having performance issues and restart issues. I have removed the inline filter.

I installed a water separator and was able to get the boat started on land but once we got to the lake and tried to start the engine it just cranked and would not start, I thought maybe it was the bulb so I went and got a new line/bulb and took the water separator out of the equation and after some time getting it to crank it did.

So now I do not have anything in between the tank/engine but the OEM parts.

Now after running for some time I have to put the throttle in neutral to start and when I go into gear I have to be quick and get the boat moving or it will stall, I see other posts with the similarity which points to idle but I also have the issue of when I have a filer between the tank and bulb.

So I have to adjust my idle speed but what could be causing the issue of getting fuel to the carbs with a filter between? could it be the pickup even if the bulb gets firm? I dont want to damage the engine with the ethanol in the fuel and would really like to get the separator installed. I removed the fuel line from the engine and there is pressure present.

whew thanks for reading. Other than these issues the boat runs well and pulls a skier/knee boarder/ tube /w 2.

Clean plugs? Idle speed 750-800 in gear? Filters will save harder work in the future.

Yup new set of plugs, clean OEM filter on the engine. Just seems that when anything is connected to the line it's harder to feed the carbs, I may take the pickup out and check it for any obstruction.

You need the proper idle speed in gear (750-800), or about 1000 in neutral. If not it will cough out. Given proper rpms, my next check would be the fuel pump diaphram. May be stretched out.

Double check your compression again. Installing the filters should have no noticeable affect on fuel delivery unless they are clogged, installed incorrectly and the fuel pump is working properly. Like foodfisher mentioned, fuel pump diaphragm should be considered as well as the 3 one way check valves inside the fuel pump.

Your idea of looking at the pick-up tube is also a good one. Sometimes the pick up tubes on some tanks have a rubber extension inside that deteriorates with age.
