Thinking of buying a new project boat. 20' chaparral
1989 has 5.7 alpha one. Needs interior work and has a soft spot in floor. I can pick this up for $2000.00... any opinions?

Re: New Project boat

A soft spot in the floor can sometimes lead to $3000 in repairs, Transom, Stringers Deck. OR Maybe not. Everything is a gamble. If the Motor is REALLY strong, has good service records and you DON'T mind woodworking, fiberglassing, carpeting etc.... then go for it, OR you could keep looking. That's my opinion.

Re: Project boat

the last one of those I bought was a 27'er... All I used from it was the transom assy, outdrive, parts of the engine, fridge, stove, and trailer..... the rest went to the landfill and scrapyard

I was leaving when I told the guy I wouldn't pay more than $350 and he said "sold"

often, a rotten ANYTHING makes a better parts boat than a project....

...and has a soft spot in floor....

Be prepared for major structural repairs. More than likely that soft spot is accompanied by bad stringers and possibly rot in the transom as well. It might work out if that's a boat you really really like, the engine and outdrive are in good condition, and you're willing and able to take care of extensive repairs. Otherwise just walk away and find something else.
