I've been wanting a small older runabout for a while now to run just for fun on the river, I came across this: http://southjersey.craigslist.org/boa/2472872088.html
Its got a new deck and transom, but needs a trailer and motor, which I have.
The deck was removed and replaced with 5/8" thick plywood and glassed over with several layers of mat but not painted but it shows what was done pretty clearly.
The transom, which is only 17" tall, is solid, made from some sort of composite?
This is the part that concerns me, I don't see any wood and the transom feels rock hard, as if it were solid glass. The seller bought it for it's motor and trailer. It's got two new pedestals and seats, the transom has never been drilled, and the windshield is even decent. The boat was last in the water this spring being used and don't appear to be just another junk hull. My thinking is that it would at the very least save me having to replace the deck and transom myself, which I would no doubt have to do on any other old boat I find. I was pretty much planning on doing that when I decided to look for another project.
Another concern is how to cover or color the deck? Right now it's got a heavy layer of glass mat and resin over the plywood, which extends from the foot rest to the front edge of the splash well. The battery and tank are sitting right on the tubular fiberglass stringers at the rear. To me, it seems that the deck should have been run all the way back to the transom? However it appears that the original floor was done the same way. (I'd just feel more comfortable with the battery sitting on something other than the outer skin of the hull and exposed stringers).
The upper part of the boat has been off and reattached, the guy also has a new rub rail and aluminum strip that goes with the boat off a parts boat since this one has a few dings here and there around the rub rail. The rear corners caps are missing but the seller has a pair of decent used ones, in fact he's got a complete set of trim off another identical boat that comes with the boat. Who ever did the transom made the top part of the hull permanent in that they filled or glassed in the top of the transom and splashwell all as one where as it was originally removable. The aluminum top cap that is usually on the top of the transom is now gone, filled and smoothed over in glass.
