I went out and had an affair with outboard fishing boats, after a ton of gas usuage and stumbling upon this new "deal" I had to bite and switch back over.

I got a 21 ft bayliner trophy with very little use on it, the hull, floors, stringers, etc are in perfect shape.

In 2006 the boat was repower from OMC to a new from the factory 250hp 350 mercruiser and bravo 1 drive setup.

The engine and outdrive had only 137 hours on before it was setup and it was freshwater cooled. The engine is now stuck from sitting for three years, but I got the boat for a song so I am going to put some time and effort into this one.

I have never used a bravo drive before so I have a couple of questions

Couple of questions:

1. bravos have a dog clutch? Do this explain why when I shift the drive it doesnt lock with the engine off?

2. My last i o set up was a 350 with a alpha drive what is the need for a bravo with only 250hp?

3. Is the thunderbolt control mod different for bravo or alpha as there is no shift interupt system?

4. Once an engine is stuck is there really any use is working with it our should I plan on putting a new longblock in?

Bravo is a cone clutch and does not use the Alpha shift interupt system
and how did you determine it`s the motor that wont turn?

Howdy,

1. bravos have a dog clutch? Do this explain why when I shift the drive it doesnt lock with the engine off?
Cone clutch. DO NOT shift it without the engine turning.

2. My last i o set up was a 350 with a alpha drive what is the need for a bravo with only 250hp?
Much better drive. (they even put them behind 4.3L v-6's)

3. Is the thunderbolt control mod different for bravo or alpha as there is no shift interupt system?
Yes (possibly) and bravos do not use (or need) a shift interrupt.

4. Once an engine is stuck is there really any use is working with it our should I plan on putting a new longblock in?
YOU need to figure out why it's stuck before you decide what to do. Pull the drive first and see if IT's stuck!

no. bravos use a cone clutch in the upper - completely different from the alpha - with the drive off you can turn the prop when in gear because the shift fork uses force against the cone when the driveshaft/cone assy is spinning, not the prop

2. My last i o set up was a 350 with a alpha drive what is the need for a bravo with only 250hp?

use a bravo because it is a better drive system - smoother shift, longevity, better control at high speeds and in some cases better control in tight marina settings

3. Is the thunderbolt control mod different for bravo or alpha as there is no shift interupt system?

no difference

4. Once an engine is stuck is there really any use is working with it our should I plan on putting a new longblock in?

is the drive locked up??

if the engine is locked up the big question is why?? - in many cases a longblock rebuild is in order but some troubleshooting is in order to find the root problem

I will pull the drive tommorrow, I am downloading the manual now, do we I need to shift the drive? Also, will it be too heavy for me to do by myself?

Put the shifter in forward..... It mentions that in the manual if you download it and actually read it.

Hard to say, are you an old man or a young weight lifter?
Look at the drive, it's steel and aluminum and an awkward shape. What do you think? It's actually around 75 or 80 lbs, and the ujoints like to eat fingers, so be careful.
